8 lessons from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War":

1. Know Thyself, Know Thy Enemy: Understanding your own strengths, weaknesses, motivations, and values is crucial. Equally important is understanding your opponents or the challenges you face. This self-awareness and situational awareness are the foundations for any successful endeavor.

2. Choose Your Battles Wisely: Not every conflict is worth fighting. Sometimes, retreating or choosing a different path is the most strategic move. Focus your energy on battles that align with your goals and values.

3. Planning is Essential: A well-thought-out plan is essential for success. Consider all possible scenarios, anticipate your opponent's moves, and be prepared to adapt your strategy as needed.

4. Deception and Misdirection: Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak. By masking your true intentions and capabilities, you can surprise your opponents and gain a strategic advantage.

5. Speed and Timing are Crucial: Act swiftly and decisively when the opportunity arises. Don't hesitate or procrastinate. The element of surprise can be a powerful weapon.

6. Use the Terrain to Your Advantage: Whether it's a physical landscape or a metaphorical one, understanding the environment you're operating in can give you a significant edge. Use the terrain to your advantage, exploit your opponent's weaknesses, and create opportunities for yourself.

7. Leadership is Essential: A strong leader inspires their team, sets clear goals, and fosters a sense of unity and purpose. Effective leadership is crucial for success in any endeavor.

8. Avoid Prolonged Conflict: War is costly, both in terms of resources and human lives. Seek to resolve conflicts quickly and efficiently whenever possible. Strive for peace and reconciliation, even in the face of adversity.

It's a great book that I highly recommend.

MC Fact: PROSPECTING

I've discussed prospecting with individuals outside the club scene or in a riding club setting. A recurring theme I've encountered is, "I couldn't prospect and be someone's bitch. I'm a man, and I would never degrade myself in that way!"

Unfortunately, these individuals misunderstand the true essence of prospecting. I assure you, I don't seek a "Yes man," a "subordinate," a "slave," etc to join my club!

They fail to grasp the genuine meaning of prospecting. Being a prospect doesn't entail submitting to others or becoming a slave for the club. It doesn't mean diminishing yourself to gain approval from patched members of any club. Prospecting signifies your ability to prioritize others' needs over your own, demonstrating that you can humble yourself to serve the club's interests. It reflects your capacity to put the needs of the club before your own, showcasing that you can serve the best interests of the club you aim to join. If you can't prioritize your Brothers/Club over yourself, pursuing a club life is not for you.

Many men fall into the "alpha male" mindset, failing to understand that being a humble servant to your brothers is the true measure of manhood. Inability to prioritize others' needs reveals whether you can be a true brother. Our clubs don't need people too "manly" to prospect; your inability to serve others demonstrates selfishness. Your "alpha male" mentality doesn't impress me.

Your ability to serve your brothers and humble yourself speaks volumes about the kind of man you are. Considering prospecting as beneath you isn't macho; it signals that you don't fit into this lifestyle and shouldn't try to join any club.

Take your pride elsewhere; I surround myself with men who prioritize the club's needs. On a similar note, I make it clear to every prospect or hangaround that they are a man first. If they allow mistreatment or alter themselves to fit in, I have no use for them. I need brothers who stand tall beside me, not cower behind me.

A conversation I had last week...

A guy who is not associated with clubs, but interested, asked me what a 1% diamond is. I asked him what he thinks of 1% diamond is. His answer was similar to, "a guy who is a badass because he's got a diamond on him."

So I explained to him the story of the Hollister riot and how the term came to be by the AMA. I'm sure you heard it before but I'll say it again.

The patch does not make the man. The man makes the patch.

A 1%er is so because of the way he lives his life. Not because of what he wears. It's a lifestyle. A state of mind. A way of living life.

It was a good conversation...

Take a look at this picture. I’m sure you’ve seen it before and thought that would never happen today and you’re right – unfortunately

This picture was taken by a world famous photographer named Danny Lyon in 1965. It shows Outlaw 1%er Zipco giving a ride to Hell Angels 1%er Funny Sonny. Funny Sonny was traveling around Chicago after leaving California and hanging with the Outlaws at the time because they were his type of people, and he theirs.

This is still true today – MCs are mostly made up of the same type of people with the same type of values and customs but politics and bad blood has come between many clubs - some would say most clubs. That's a shame. I really like this photo. It shows a much more innocent time. A time when it was all about the bike and the brother.

I don’t pretend to believe that the MC world can ever get back to that innocent time but it would be nice to see different patches rolling together down the highway. This article is NOT about these two clubs. It’s more about the MC world in general and how I wish things were more like how they used to be.
