Did you know OGL supports young researchers in many different ways?

🀿 One way is collaborating with Northeastern's Three Seas Program!

To celebrate , we are highlighting how OGL teaches students in this program about the importance of collections science, especially when preserving and cataloging marine species. We show them the process of extracting and storing DNA from the tissue of marine organisms, and their work contributes to an expanding 'Three Seas' collection within our biorepository.

Today is ! OGL is a marine laboratory and specimen biorepository dedicated to expanding access to its collection to advance understanding and protect our planet’s largest ecosystem. OGL is committed to training the next generation of scientists to carry out this critical mission. One way in which OGL achieves this is through its Student Research in Biodiversity Collections and Informatics Program. Here, undergraduate students help curate biological specimens and data in OGL’s large database, gaining further experience with taxonomy, collection records, and sample management.

Today is ! Established in his memory, the Don Comb Research Co-op Fund at OGL provides undergraduate students with hands-on research experience. Selected students work closely with senior mentors at OGL to test the efficiency of different DNA preservative methods, which are critical to OGL's mission of preserving marine biodiversity for long-term use. It is a fitting tribute to OGL's founder, Don Comb, a man with a passion for science and the sea, and a commitment to inspiring young scientists to help create a better world.

🌊🧬 Support OGL's Don Comb Research Scholar Fund 🧬🌊

Today is ! In honor of OGL founder Don Comb, whose passion for marine science continues to inspire, our Don Comb Research Scholar Fund gives undergraduate students hands-on research experience while fostering scientific inquiry.

Our past Don Comb Research Scholar Co-op Anna says:

"I completed my first co-op at OGL and received invaluable mentorship from Rosie, Hannah, and Dan. During this time, I gained an enormous amount of lab experience, as well as improved my scientific communication by presenting in lab meetings and participating in outreach programs. Throughout my co-op, I was able to put my skills to use to design my own independent research project. I have applied everything I learned at OGL throughout my college career, and I am a better scientist because of it. I am deeply grateful to everyone at OGL who mentored me and made my first co-op such a fulfilling and joyful experience!"

🌊 OGL on the road!

Our Collections Manager Hannah and Lab Manager Rosie recently attended an Arctos User Experience Workshop, hosted by the Arctos Consortium at the University of New Mexico’s Sevilleta Field Station and sponsored by NSF’s iDigBio.

Over four days, they joined an international group of collections professionals to explore how researchers and the public interact with Arctos, the community-driven database that houses all of OGL’s collection data. As OGL’s biorepository continues to grow, ensuring our collection catalog is accessible, intuitive, and equitable is key to helping scientists around the world discover and request samples for marine biodiversity research.

On Thursday, March 5, OGL proudly participated in the High School Marine Science Symposium at Northeastern University! Hosted by both the Northeastern University Marine Science Center and the Massachusetts Marine Educators, this symposium unites hundreds of high school students and teachers each year to explore marine science through expert speakers, science demonstrations, and hands-on activities led by professionals in the field.

As an exhibitor, OGL led two hands-on activities. The first is called 'Fish Foresnsics,' which has students identify fish species by both their physical traits and analyzing their DNA. The second activity is called 'Far From Home' and here, students were able to learn more about our preserved organisms, the environments they reside in, and why we collect and study marine specimens.

Shoutout to our OGL alumni Anna and Zack for joining us!

Thank you Northeastern's Marine Science Center and Massachusetts Marine Educators for hosting a wonderful event!
