School may be out for the summer, but The Helping House is not ☀️ Summer is actually our busiest and most expensive season, because our kids need structured support year-round to keep moving forward. Your gift to All the Tools for Tomorrow helps make sure we can give them our best tools🛠️ ✔️: https://thehelpinghouse.harnessgiving.org/campaigns/20506

3️⃣ Feeding Therapy, Part III

Current Slevin

He has tried lots of foods over the past year and a half. This is all due to mom's persistent and patient exposure. He feels safe (obviously he's at home with no clothes on!) and he has time to process and work through it on his own. He has tried chicken pot pie, sloppy joes, squash, berries, sweet potatoes - all manner of foods mixed together, heated up, and with a variety of textures. In the video, he is trying coffee for the first time by dipping his donut in it.

Is this typical of all of our kids? Not necessarily. But it IS POSSIBLE. I wanted to share this hope. Feeding therapy is not overnight. We have a long game. Most important to this is trust and rapport. Mom also attributes his flexibility to the use of THC tinctures for a time.

My favorite thing is to hear of our kids' continued successes, well beyond their time at THH. I love to hear that he is using strategies he learned ten years ago to try new things!

We are so proud of Slevin (and his mama!)

2️⃣ Feeding Therapy, Part II

Slevin, circa 2019.

Our rapport is such that I know he loves "closing the circle" and completing activities and earning checkmarks and proceeding through a schedule.

Our rapport is also such that he knows I won't ever put a food in his mouth. He knows that my expectations are reasonable for his success.

Please notice that he cheers for himself. Please also notice the self-regulating behaviors he has when eating his preferred food. He is overcoming his own anxiety and working through it.

1⃣ Feeding Therapy, Part I

Meet Slevin, circa 2016.

He eats very few foods. Mom works hard to get protein in and reduce the processed food that feels safest to him.

Feeding therapy is a long, slow game. They will not "eat when they are hungry." This is not how restricted eating works. Our successes with Slevin were small but notable during his 5 years of attending The Helping House.

Occasionally, he would try new foods if they were strategically placed on his visual schedule as "activities" to do.

Occasionally, he would touch, smell, kiss, or lick a new food when exposed in small quantities with a contingent reward.

More often than not, his foods were safe and comforting and reduce his anxiety. (Look at his little anxious face!)

Our Summer Clinic helps bridge the gap when school-based services and routines pause for the summer. For many of our families, these months can mean lost progress, fewer resources, and limited access to support. Through our clinic, we continue providing care, encouragement, structure, and opportunities for growth during a season when consistency matters most. Take a peek

The years between 18 months and 6 years are the most critical window for children with autism or developmental delays, and early intervention during that time changes everything. 🧠 Your support helps us make the most of every single day: https://ow.ly/ukf050YZatt
