A mighty oak has fallen. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Most Worshipful Carl Smith. He was a true gentleman, consistently exemplifying kindness, civility, and leadership. We will miss his gentle spirit. If you had the pleasure of meeting him, he would introduce himself as Bro. Carl and often wore his white apron and sat with the Brothers on the sidelines especially the newest Masons. Little did they know he was a Grand Master.

Contrary to what you'd expect from someone who invented one of the first rapid-fire weapons, Gatling wasn’t trying to glorify war. In fact, he believed that by increasing firepower, fewer soldiers would be needed—and lives could be saved.

In 1877, Richard J. Gatling wrote: "It occurred to me that if I could invent a machine (a gun) which could by its rapidity of fire, enable one man to do as much battle duty as a hundred, that it would, to a large extent, supersede the necessity of large armies, and consequently, exposure to battle and disease would be greatly diminished."

Let that sink in.

Earlier tonight we installed this 3-in-1 chair assembly for the East; it turned out even better than we had pictured! Thank you Genesee Valley Lodge #122 for generously donating this glamorous piece of furniture on behalf of Livonia’s former lodge, and special thanks to brother Brian Mastin for his assistance getting it loaded up onto the truck and for offering it to our possession. We will thoroughly enjoy it!
