We had a visitor for the last 2 days. I didn't want to share until I knew what the outcome would be tho.
The hubs was patrolling up on the Blue Ridge Mountains & came across a juvenile Pelican in the middle of the road. Blue Ridge is over an hour away from the coastline & this baby was definitely off track for his migration so, of course, the hubs scooped him up & brought him home. He, or she, stayed with us for 2 nights while we made copious amounts of phone calls trying to figure out what to do.
Our best option was to have the marine biologists in Charleston do an exam. They found nothing visually wrong with the bird so with our friends at OSP, the juvenile was taken down to an ocean cove where there was a flock of Pelicans & set free.
Apparently, there have been a tremendous amount of juvenile Pelicans migrating up from California earlier than normal due to the early warm weather. Then with the high winds, they are often blown of track which is what we think happened to this one.
This youngster was exhausted & just needed a safe place to land for a couple days until he/she could be reunited with a flock.
A happy ending for everyone.
