Some great work being done by UNLSH members on the Shadow Pond restoration project!

In 2024 the Umpqua National Forest, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, implemented the Shadow Pond restoration project which aimed to restore a 5-acre wetland along Shadow Creek, a tributary of the Upper South Umpqua River in the Tiller Ranger District.

The Shadow Pond restoration project was made possible by grants from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Yoncalla Spill Restoration Fund, and the Drinking Water Provider’s Partnership. South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership helped with grant administration. On-the-ground work was accomplished by Umpqua National Forest botany, wildlife, fisheries, recreation and hydrology staff, Umpqua Natural Leadership Science Hub members, Pheonix School volunteers, Wetland Restoration Specialist Tom Biebighauser, and local contractors from Crume Development LLC.

Stay tuned this week as we talk about the history of Shadow Pond, the need for the project, work completed, and future plans.
