Checked-in Route 66 Capital Cruise drivers who could not join the route will be eligible for a refund of their registration fee according to event organizers.

This comes a day after reports of many local and out-of-state drivers being turned away from the Cruise route, and allegations of mismanagement of the event that drew hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Hear from two sisters who were turned away at the gate before the route in the comments below.

Here’s a news release with more explanation of the record and what happened to those turned away and their refunds.

-Tulsa’s Route 66 Capital Cruise: World-Record Classic Car Centennial Parade was an unprecedented event on a massive scale, never before attempted in the continental United States.

-Capital Cruise set out to be an unmatched celebration of the Centennial of America’s iconic Highway, Route 66, in a safe and secure environment, and that goal was achieved. Tulsa is now the proud owner of the record for Largest Parade of Classic Cars in History, beating the previous record by 44 percent.

-The first car entered the Cruise route at 8:00 a.m., beginning approximately four hours of continuous parade operations, with cars passing the adjudicator stage at a rate of 1,000 cars per hour. After deductions for stalled/disabled vehicles, gaps in the parade longer than two car lengths and non-compliant vehicles, the official world record total is 3,596—1,105 cars more than the previous record.

-More than 100,000 people and Route 66 enthusiasts took part in the festivities all weekend long, from the Capital Cruise Expo, the Tailgate Party presented by Bank of Oklahoma, and Capital Cruise itself on Saturday, May 30.

-The 5.5-mile route and 16 distinct Cruise Party Zones were full of multi-generational joy and community spirit, celebrating the Centennial of Route 66 in the Capital of Route 66® with cars and drivers from all corners.

-Capital Cruise was a dedicated attempt at an official world record, and as such, specific rules and regulations needed to be followed.

-Drivers were instructed to arrive between 6 and 9 a.m, with a final deadline of 10 a.m.
-Staging time was extended until 11 a.m. in an effort to accommodate late arrivals.
-Once the last checked-in cars exited staging and Expo Square was fully purged, event organizers and law enforcement ensured the record attempt’s protection by decisively ending the parade.
-Unfortunately, checked-in drivers continued to arrive for staging after the parade concluded.

-Any checked-in driver who was unable to enter the Cruise route will have the opportunity to request a refund of their registration fee in a communication sent to their registered email in the coming days.

-Those drivers are still official world-record holders and considered full participants in Tulsa’s Route 66 Capital Cruise.

-Capital Cruise by the numbers:
Approximately 100,000 spectators and attendees in the three-day celebration
5,100 driver registrations
4,760 checked-in & credentialed drivers
4,300 drivers successfully arrived at Expo Square before the parade concluded (including a one-hour extension)
3,596 certified vehicles after deductions from stalled/disabled or non-compliant vehicles or gaps longer than two car lengths, beating the previous record by 1,105 vehicles (44 percent increase)

-More than 300 vendors, sponsors, attractions, entertainers and activations between Capital Cruise Expo, Tailgate and Cruise Route.

Rt 66 Capital Cruise World Record setting event is in the books!
Our club had 9 vehicles cruise to Tulsa on Friday, we had others meet us there, we set a meeting place for Saturday morning at 7am near the EXPO center. 7 cars showed up there and got in line with us on Yale behind the horse track at 7:35am and there we sat until about 9:30am or so when it finally started moving and we made it into the parking lot to be counted in the cruise at about 9:50am. We are hearing that many did not get to drive the parade route even though they were there for hours waiting to get in. We are so sad to hear that.
Event planning is not easy and there are always those quick to point out the flaws and there are always flaws. It seems that the event planners for the Capital Cruise got way more participation than they ever expected or could handle. We don’t know the whys or reasons for what happened. We feel terrible for anyone that paid to drive in this cruise and didn’t get to actually do it and we hope there is some solution to the complaints and at a minimum a sincere apology to the large number of disappointed people.
Our group was very lucky to have actually gotten to drive in this once in a lifetime experience and we are thankful for that. We are thankful for the good time with VW family out on the Mother Road making memories.

For the record….
We hear there were over 5,000 paid entries.
They allowed in and counted only 3,596 drivers/cars.
There were easily over 1,000 left outside the Expo center that were paid entrants that were not allowed in after they locked the gates at 10am. (correction: 11am)
There was a time limit to the World Record and the time slot to set the record was 8am to 10am.
You picked up your packet at one place on Thursday or Friday and the driver information station was in a different place with a long line to get a map and instructions about what to do on Saturday morning.
I was personally told by the info people that arriving at 6am wasn’t advised and I should wait until closer to 8am (thankful we didn’t do that)
There was no official merch for sale at the event. It was all preorder only.
A new official World Record was set in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Historic Rt 66 and we got to be a part of that.

Lots to learn from this but overall our group had fun. We are sad that not everyone had that experience.
