🌎🌱 Earth Day in Action! 🌱🌎

On April 22, we had an incredible time honoring Earth Day at the Brushy Community Garden in Sallisaw, OK!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined the People Inc TSET Healthy Living Program and OSU HOP to support the clean-up and planting efforts. Together, we helped strengthen a space that provides fresh food for community meals and local families.

🌿 From preparing the garden beds to planting new seeds, every contribution made a meaningful impact. This garden continues to be an important resource for the community, and we’re grateful to have been part of it.

💚 Thank you to the Brushy Community Center staff, volunteers, and all participants for making this day so special.

SNAP as an Economic Engine 💡💰

SNAP is one of the most efficient economic tools we have, and it’s right here in Oklahoma. 🌾

• 93% of SNAP funding goes directly to benefits 🧾
• In 2024, SNAP brought about $1.3 billion into Oklahoma 📊
• That generated more than $2 billion in economic activity 🔄💵

SNAP dollars don’t sit still. They move quickly through grocery stores 🛒, farmers markets 🥕, and local businesses 🏪, supporting jobs 👩‍🌾👨‍💼 and strengthening communities across our state. 🤝

SNAP doesn’t just help families make it through the month, it helps Oklahoma’s economy keep moving. 🚀

On March 24, our team participated in the Brushy Lake Park Walking Trail Assessment in Sallisaw as part of the SCPA&N Workgroup efforts.

In partnership with the Cherokee Nation Health Educator, OSDH, People Inc. TSET Healthy Living Program & Youth Services, and OSU HOP, we walked and evaluated the trail to assess its safety, cleanliness, and overall accessibility for community members.

🌿 Building healthier communities, one garden at a time

We were proud to take part in the Brushy Community Garden Clean Up and Planting on March 30 at the Brushy Community Center in Sallisaw.

Working alongside the Cherokee Nation Health Educator, OSDH, People Inc. TSET Healthy Living Program, People Inc. Youth Services, and OSU HOP, our team joined volunteers to help clean, prepare, and plant the community garden.

This space does more than grow produce, it helps provide fresh ingredients for meals served at the center and supports local families by sharing food within the community.

We’re committed to supporting initiatives that make healthy choices easier and more accessible for everyone.

Making strides for a safer, healthier community 👫💪🧡

We're proud to share more pictures from our team taking part in the Elm Street Walk Lane Labeling Project right here in Sallisaw.

In partnership with the Cherokee Nation Health Educator, OSDH, People Inc. TSET Healthy Living Program & Youth Services, and OSU HOP, we worked together to label the walking lane along Elm Street with clear, helpful icons. This project helps create a safer, more accessible path for pedestrians.

This initiative is about more than paint on pavement, it’s about building an environment that encourages movement, supports wellness, and keeps our community safe.

Creating safe places to walk can make all the difference. When communities support healthy choices, real change becomes possible!

“Walk this way” 👣

We’re proud to see our team’s work featured in the Sequoyah County Times! In a recent article by Lynn Adams, efforts to improve pedestrian safety in our community were highlighted.

In collaboration with the Physical Activity Work Group, OSU Extension Office, Cherokee Nation Public Health, and the TSET Healthy Living Program at People Inc., our team helped paint pedestrian indicators along Elm Street to alert drivers and encourage safer use of the designated walking lane.

Projects like this aren’t just about infrastructure, they’re about creating safer opportunities for people to stay active and prioritize their health.

Change starts with simple steps. Something as accessible as walking can be a powerful tool in improving overall health and well-being.
