Some safety tips to keep in mind if you venture onto the ice this winter. Please remember ice is never 100% safe!!
* Avoid areas with cracked, thin, clear, or honeycombed ice. Dark snow and ice can also indicate weak spots. Ice thickness can change quickly, so it's important to check it regularly.
* Have a safe rescue plan and go with at least one other person. Bring a safety line that can be thrown to someone who falls through the ice.
* Dress warmly. Wear layers and bring extra warm clothes in a waterproof bag.
* Carry a life jacket, ice picks or ice claws, a whistle, and a charged cell phone in a waterproof bag.
* Avoid inlets, outlets, or narrow areas that may have currents that can thin the ice. Stay off the ice along the shoreline if it's cracked or squishy.
* If you fall through the ice, stay calm, don't remove your winter clothing, and try to go back toward where you came from. Place your hands and arms on the unbroken ice.
