For the past forty years, a tight-knit group of predominantly men has cultivated a unique and enduring tradition. Every Fourth of July, this group convenes for a joyful reunion at the beach, soaking in the sun, the surf, and decades of camaraderie.
Their history is rich: for many years, the gathering took place at Prairie Cut Beach. Yet, a few years back, they shifted their grounds to Northside Beach for a brief stint. Eventually, they found a home at Pier Marquette Beach in Muskegon, which has since become the backdrop of their cherished annual get-together.
The majority of these gentlemen are now in their late 60s to early 70s, but their spirit is timeless. With the Fourth of July sun rising, they arrived at their beloved spot, bringing with them not just memories but also essential supplies for a day-long celebration. Three picnic tables were connected to form one long banquet space. Games, laughter, and stories flowed as seamlessly as the gentle waves nearby.
A grill was set up to sizzle with an array of delicious treats, ensuring everyone had their fill. Coolers brimming with cold beverages and snacks dotted their enclave on the sand. Throughout, everyone shared in the preparation and feasting, epitomizing the communal spirit that originally bound them together.
The men, some of whom have been friends since boyhood, basked in the beautiful Muskegon beach. The rhythm of the waves accompanied their banter, as tales of past years' escapades mixed with current events. New memories were forged as they reminisced about where it all started, and how each year, despite the tides and the passage of time, they’ve remained steadfast.
Muskegon’s Pier Marquette Beach provided a picturesque stage for this annual gathering. As they sat there, surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of the beach, there was a palpable sense of continuity and connection. These moments, woven together year after year, painted a beautiful legacy of friendship against the ever-changing backdrop of life.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the water, the men knew they would meet again next year. Same beach, similar setup, and the promise of another day filled with laughter, reminiscing, and the unspoken bond of lifelong friendship.
This is Muskegon — where memories endure, traditions thrive, and old friends gather to cherish the new day, year after year.
