How do I start?
For many members, recovery began with a willingness to reach out and learn more about OA.
You do not need to know everything before attending a meeting. You are welcome to listen, observe, and take in what feels helpful for you today.
OA meetings are centered on sharing experience, strength, and hope as part of OA’s primary purpose: carrying the message of recovery to those who still suffer.
You may also find support by:
• Reading newcomer literature
• Exploring the Where Do I Start? guide
• Listening to podcasts
• Connecting with OA in your preferred language
Recovery is a process of taking actions one day at a time. Your first step can be simple.

Discomfort can bring up the urge to react, explain, or protect ourselves. In this Lifeline story, one OA member reflects on learning to pause, let go, and allow a Higher Power to bring wisdom from an unsettling moment.
“I Stand Aside from My Discomforts to Stand Inside Wisdom” offers a reminder that we do not have to respond to every feeling right away. Recovery can give us the space to listen, stay open, and trust that growth may come through what feels difficult.
Read the full story on Lifeline and see how one member finds humility, willingness, and a new way to respond through the practice of letting go.

Step 6 is not about changing overnight 🌙➡️🌞. It’s about being willing to be changed. Often, our defects feel like protection—control, perfectionism, resentment 🛡️. But Step 6 invites us to surrender our self-will and allow a Higher Power to begin the transformation 🔄.
Step 6: “We’re entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.”
Spiritual Principle: Willingness

What can we do when we feel caught in a cycle we don’t want to continue?

In Hope in Addiction, Jacki turns to a Higher Power for strength, peace, and the willingness to keep moving forward. She shares a deeply personal reflection on an experience many of us recognize: continuing in a behavior that hurts us, while truly wanting to be free from it.

There is no promise of immediate answers, but there is something steady and meaningful: the choice to keep going, one day at a time.

Reading stories like this can help us see we are not alone. They can also offer a sense of direction, even when the path feels unclear.
