On June 18, Ethiopia officially launched the National Soil Health and Fertility Management Multi-Stakeholder Platform!

This marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to address widespread soil degradation and declining soil fertility and to enhance agricultural productivity through strengthened collaboration, policy dialogue, and coordinated action.

The platform was launched at a national workshop convened by the Transform Soil Fertility Management in Ethiopia (TRANSFORM) project.

During the launch, TRANSFORM Program Director Kassahun Alato shared, "The Multi-Stakeholder Platform is a strategic mechanism that will strengthen coordination among stakeholders and support the implementation of Ethiopia’s National Fertilizer and Soil Health Roadmap."

Fertilizer policy is food policy!

The consequences of the disruption in the fertilizer market caused by closure of the Strait of Hormuz will be shaped by policy decisions. The next round of actions will determine whether fertilizer markets gradually stabilize or face another wave of volatility.

The message is clear: safeguarding food security requires more than restoring supply chains. It also requires policy coordination, transparency, and a commitment to keeping fertilizer markets functioning.

IFDC était l’invité d’Eden TV ce mardi pour alerter sur l’importance stratégique de la santé des sols. Lors de l’émission intitulée « Développement durable et résilience climatique : quand le sol souffre, l’environnement s’affaiblit », Adodo Abalo, Directeur Développement et Partenariats Pays Côtiers à IFDC, et Moïse Obayomi Adegnika, Responsable Innovations et Agriculture Intelligente du programme ACMA3, ont pris la parole pour partager leur expertise.

Ils ont souligné le rôle central des sols dans la sécurité alimentaire et la résilience climatique, exposé les problèmes liés à la dégradation des terres au Bénin et en Afrique, et présenté des solutions concrètes portées par IFDC et le programme ACMA3.

Cette intervention a contribué à renforcer la sensibilisation du grand public.

In Burkina Faso's Houet province, Guiriko region, trials are being conducted directly on farms under the supervision of agricultural agents, allowing the Barbary Plante technology to be evaluated under real-world production conditions. The crops being tested are tomatoes, peppers, and corn.

Fernand Sanou, a local farmer, established two plots: one treated with Barbary Plante and the other with conventional farming practices.

He shared, “We had a pump breakdown, and before the repair, the plants in the control plot started to wilt. Those treated with Barbary Plante fared better, thanks to improved water retention in the soil.”

Yacine Sanou/Ouattara, a producer trained by the program in Houndé, also reports rapid growth in the treated plants. The first fruits appeared 35 days after transplanting, while the control plot was only at the flowering stage.

Earlier this year, the participated in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Institute for Rural Development (IDR) in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

Soil Values used this unique platform to present the program’s vision, approaches, and contributions to key stakeholders in the rural sector.

Through interactive exchanges, the program highlighted its commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices, capacity building, and the dissemination of farmer‑centered technologies.

From March 30 to April 1, the Soil Values Program organized a training session in Lomé, Togo on organo-mineral fertilizers.

This initiative aims to build a network of trainers and technical specialists capable of promoting the production, quality, and adoption of these fertilizers in their respective countries.

𝗣𝗦𝗦𝗗𝟮 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀!

The Private Seed Sector Development (PSSD2) project, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Burundi, is playing a significant role in strengthening and professionalizing Burundi’s seed sector.

PSSD2’s interventions have benefited seed entrepreneurs in Burundi with:
✅ The construction of 22 seed storage warehouses
✅ The provision of four three-wheeled motorcycles
✅ Three community irrigation structures

Investments in this infrastructure and equipment are designed to improve seed preservation, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance the quality and reliability of seed production systems, ultimately improving farmers’ access to certified seeds and increasing agricultural productivity.

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) plays a vital role in addressing food security and climate change. However, a key gap remains: effective soil health monitoring.

A new article co-authored by IFDC Vice President of Research Zachary Stewart, along with IFDC Board members Dr. Leigh Ann Winowiecki and Dr. Rattan Lal, draws on over two decades of research to highlight the central role of soil health in CSA. The authors demonstrate that healthy soils underpin all three CSA objectives—adaptation, mitigation, and productivity—by regulating water availability, nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and biodiversity conservation.

Strengthening soil health monitoring infrastructure is therefore essential to advancing CSA.
