IFDC IFDC is a public international organization active in 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and America.

IFDC is an independent non-profit organization that combines innovative research, market systems development, and partnerships to spread sustainable agricultural solutions for improved soil health, food security, and livelihoods around the world. IFDC uniquely approaches the global issues of food security and poverty by bridging the gap between research and impact, combining science-based innovati

ons, holistic market systems development, an enabling policy environment, and strategic partnerships to assist farmers and countries to identify and scale sustainable agricultural solutions, including improved nutrient use efficiency. These approaches are needed to boost soil health and crop productivity while reducing the environmental impact of fertilizer use. IFDC translates research into action by using locally driven, environmentally sound, and impact-oriented solutions. With our partners, we seek to close the yield gap, eradicate global hunger, safeguard the soils on which our lives depend, and generate economic resilience for farming households and the countries in which they live.

In April, the Soil Values program held a training event in Mali that helped equip young people with practical agribusiness and organic fertilizer production skills to strengthen their livelihoods.

Over the four-day program, participants worked through several practical and classroom-based modules on topics such as seedling production, plant production, and grafting techniques. In the agricultural entrepreneurship modules, they learned about building and managing profitable businesses. Attendees also learned and practiced step-by-step techniques for producing organic fertilizers and inputs.

Participants said the sessions helped make entrepreneurship more concrete and easier to apply.

Trainees are expected to serve as ambassadors for disseminating good agricultural practices within their communities, contributing to improved food security and soil regeneration in Mali.

Did you know that IFDC is seeking to create a center for fertilizer innovation in Alabama: the Laboratory of Innovations for Fertilizers in the United States (LIFe-US)?

To address current geopolitical tensions, reliance on imported fertilizers and materials, and the need for fertilizer research and new supply chains, LIFe-US will serve as a national hub for innovative, leading research on fertilizers and plant nutrition.

The center's work will help to ensure continued crop productivity in the United States, as well as a more protected global food supply chain.

This is an ideal opportunity to engage the legacy of IFDC by creating a next-generation research and technology center for fertilizer testing and development, building on the history of fertilizer development in Alabama and moving that science forward to meet the needs of today and beyond.

Have you heard the news? A few weeks ago, IFDC opened a new office at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) headquarters in Texcoco, Mexico!

This office is the next step in a joint effort to establish a Fertilizer Innovation Center (FIC) for Mexico and Central America, a regional hub that will pioneer affordable, science-based fertilizer solutions to restore soil health, boost crop yields, and empower smallholder farmers across the region.

The new office and FIC will strengthen U.S.-Mexico trade interests and reflect the shared commitment between CIMMYT and IFDC to solve common problems. Both organizations extend their sincerest appreciation to the U.S. Department of State for the funds that have enabled this shared effort.

"By combining IFDC’s five decades of integrated soil health and fertilizer innovation with CIMMYT’s deep regional networks, cropping systems, and seed science expertise, we can deliver the science-based, farmer-centered solutions this region needs to break the cycle of soil degradation and import dependency," said Bram Govaerts, Director General of CIMMYT.
