Alexis Husko, board president of the nonprofit Progress Muscatine, spoke with us about Fresh Start Fest. Held before the school year begins, the program provides students with fresh haircuts and hygiene products so they can return to school with greater confidence.

A strong advocate for reading, Alexis is also collecting books to distribute at the City of Muscatine Trunk or Treat on Oct. 24 at Kent Stein. Donations may include baby board books through young adult titles. Alexis is happy to pick up donations, or donors may drop them off at Muscatine Tech on Second Street. She would like to receive all books by Oct. 20 so she has time to sort them before the event.

Our September 29th program was arranged by John Miller. Our presenter was Emily Hernandez, one of two directors for Special Olympics Muscatine. A year-around sports program that operates out of the Muscatine Community Y, it covers activities in Muscatine and two adjacent counties (plus occasional participating in regional and multi-state Special Olympics events), and it now offers 13 sports.

Affiliated with Special Olympics Iowa, its primary focus is on offering sports training, social skills, and confidence-building for youth and adults with intellectual disabilities The youngest athlete currently being served is 9 years old and the oldest is in his 80s – a wonderfully wide age range is being served! Emily reported that 152 athletes are currently participating, up from 138 last year. Programming is totally free to all athletes.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of a check for $200.00 to help support this outstanding success story, based right here in Muscatine! Keep up the great work!

In addition to widespread community participation and the work of Key Club and Kiwanis volunteers, corporate support has played an instrumental role in the success of our recently-concluded Peanut Days fundraiser.

Kiwanis member Jim Miller, Co-Founder and President of Youth Sports Foundation, was the presenter at our weekly meeting on Tuesday, September 22. It is simply amazing how this Muscatine-based organization has grown over the years, serving thousands of kids and supporting a broad array of sports throughout our region since 1996.

Four of our members traveled to Clinton, Iowa on Wednesday, September 16 to attend a luncheon meeting of the Clinton Kiwanis Club held at the famous Rastrelli’s Restaurant. The program featured several speakers from the Clinton Public Library and focused on public input and plans for the future. Representing the Muscatine Kiwanis were Ed Lampe, Bob Nicolai, Wes Walker and Jon Moravec.

She covered a variety of topics including the assessment process, determination of property values, and how they can be adjusted and appealed. Along the way she included anecdotes about her experiences over the years while serving as Assessor. Kiwanis member Ed Lampe was the speaker at our September 8th meeting. His presentation described his journey from near-fatal encounter with cancer in recent years to a return to health. He described many of the surprising things he learned through study and research throughout the experience, including the toxins we unknowingly encounter in everyday living and how they can be avoided and/or remedied. Thank you, Ed, for an interesting and informative talk!
