Mike Gaeta represented the Muscatine Kiwanis Club at the annual Senior Awards Program, held the evening of Wednesday, May 13 at the Muscatine High School Auditorium.

During his remarks, he asked the seniors who are Key Club members to stand and be recognized for their many hours of community service during the year.

Mike also presented two $1,500 Kiwanis scholarships: the Henry Miller Memorial Scholarship, and the Harold Ogilvie, Sr. and E. Herbert Carlson Scholarship, received respectively by Faith Miller (pictured left) and Sasha Cacho (on the right).

In addition, Mike recognized the ongoing financial support of the Miller family over the years which continues to make the Henry Miller Memorial Scholarship possible.

Kiwanis member Vern McAlister made the arrangements for Muscatine County Treasurer Amy Zybarth to speak at our April 28th meeting. She provided an excellent background on the duties and responsibilities of the Treasurer’s office, and passed along some of the interesting experiences she has had in over 25 years of service. Thanks, Amy, for taking the time to speak to us – and best wishes on your upcoming retirement!

A lot of ground was covered at our April 14th meeting! Our program featured a presentation by Kim Warren, Director of the Aligned Impact Muscatine (AIM) program at United Way of Muscatine. It was interesting to learn of the wide variety of ways that AIM has capitalized on opportunities to marshal various resources and revenues to benefit our community.

Lieutenant Governor David Franz (Clinton Kiwanis) and his wife, Barb (Fulton Kiwanis), visited our meeting. Dave passed along information from the Midwinter Conference while Barb shared success stories and ideas from the Fulton Club.

Ed Lampe provided an update on the Key Club at Muscatine High School. He reported that 23 members attended the most recent meeting. Current activities include staffing MHS concessions to raise funds, and supporting a blood drive at the school. Club members will be attending our meeting next week.

Ed also reported that four Muscatine Kiwanis members attended an interclub meeting at the Fulton Kiwanis Club last week.

Mason Kopf provided an update on our Highway Cleanup project scheduled for Friday, May 1st and passed around information/release forms to participants. The cleanup will be held concurrently with one sponsored by the MHS Key Club.

Jenna Wagner reminded members that Rose Sale distribution day is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, April 22nd. Participants may want to remind purchasers; a reminder notice will also be posted on our page.

A reminder was also made to board members that the April meeting is scheduled for noon this coming Monday, April 20th.

The speaker at our April 7th program was Dash Wiseman, the Boatswain (youth leader) of Sea Scout Ship 7127. Based in Muscatine, this is a youth-led, high-adventure scouting program unit chartered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers volunteers.

The Ship focuses on maritime skills, including boating and environmental stewardship on the Mississippi River, with activities such as kayaking and camping trips. Of special note was the new Towhead Island project, facilitated through a charitable contribution administered through the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine.

Thank you, Dash, for a great program – and thanks for Kiwanis member Mike Hartman for making the arrangements!

Well-known local businessman, golfer and Muscatine Charities board member Tom Hendricks provided an interesting presentation on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) at our March 31st meeting.

Established in 1978, the AJGA is national, nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

This year, from April 29th thru May 3rd, Muscatine’s Geneva Golf & Country Club will be the venue for an AJGA Junior event, including a Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament on April 30th. It's sure to be a great opportunity to see some outstanding young golfers, and to support an excellent cause as well. Thank you, Tom, for an interesting and informative presentation!
