MOD MONDAY: MODERN QUILT LAYOUTS

Today we’re exploring one of the easiest ways to give any quilt a fresh, modern feel: the layout. You don’t need new blocks or fancy tools — just a new way of arranging what you already love.

✨ What Makes a Layout “Modern”?

Asymmetry — blocks placed off‑center for movement and energy

Negative Space — open areas that let your blocks breathe

Alternate Gridwork — shifting blocks off the traditional straight grid

Oversized Blocks — fewer pieces, bigger impact

Minimalism — clean, simple compositions with strong color or value

🧵 Why Modern Layouts Work for Any Quilter

They make traditional blocks look brand new

They’re great for using up orphan blocks

They allow you to showcase favorite fabrics

They’re surprisingly easy to sew — often fewer seams, fewer decisions

💡 Try This at Home

Take a classic block — Log Cabin, Churn Dash, Nine Patch — and experiment with:

placing it in one corner

spacing blocks far apart

rotating blocks in unexpected directions

mixing block sizes

A small shift in layout can completely transform a quilt.

LET'S DISCUSS
What traditional block would you love to see in a modern layout?

THE MAGIC OF COLOR INTERACTION

For our June Guild meeting (June 25, 2026) our guest speaker will be MJ Kinman coming in to us via Zoom. She is renowned for her use of color to evoke gem like surfaces in her quilts.
More information on MJ Kinman can be found at http://MJKinman.com

Notes on the lecture she will give:
“Josef Albers, the great artist/educator of the 20th Century, acknowledged how tricky colors can be. In his words, “Colors deceive continuously.” As artists, how do we navigate this world of
deception? Luckily, by using a few simple rules, we can predict how color will try to deceive us and thereby increase our color confidence.

In this lecture, MJ Kinman, maker of giant gem quilts, will share four rules of color interaction and show you how to apply them to your own quilt design to create dramatic effects –
regardless of your subject matter. For example, MJ will show you how to:

• Add sparkle (“bling”!) to your quilts.
• Create dramatic focal points.
• Add exciting visual movement.
• Make your quilts glow.
• Create powerful transparencies.
• Alter the appearance of a color simply by pairing with another color.
• Create the illusion of metal surfaces without using metallic fabric or thread.

MJ’s lecture is based on her new book, “Cracking the Color Code: Master the Magic of Color Interaction”, available on her website.

Not a member but would like to check it out? Be our guest for $5!

See you all there :)
