Welcome to the wonderful month of May! Rain, sun, warmth, and the occasional chill have all mixed together to help us celebrate the end of winter and look forward to the bright summer ahead.

As we kick off this month, I’m excited to introduce the Iowa Community Theatre Association (ICTA) Board for 2026 — a team of volunteers who travel the state after work, on weekends, and whenever they can spare the time for curtain calls to support and uplift community theatre in Iowa:

President: Frank Sposeto III – At-large
Vice-President: Denise Gregory – Union Street Players, Pella
Treasurer: Gerard Schwickerath – At-large
Secretary: Courtenay Baker – Mount Vernon Lisbon Community Theatre - MVLCT, Mt. Vernon
Board Members:
Helen Beneke – Princess City Players, Pocahontas
Amy Brown Gaghagen – Countryside Community Theatre, Eldridge
John Claes – Ankeny Community Theatre, Ankeny
Loween Getter – Webster City Community Theatre, Webster City
Scott Heit – Mills Masquers, Glenwood
Lisa Naig – Marshalltown Community Theatre, Marshalltown
Anita Ross – Waterloo Community Playhouse/Black Hawk Children's Theatre, Waterloo
Ciara Schierkolk – SWITG Park Playhouse, Shenandoah

Past-President and Awards Chair: Tammy Sposeto – XFade Productions, Collins (non voting)

ICTA proudly serves as Iowa’s chapter within AACT - American Association of Community Theatre AACT Region V Association, which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, and Iowa. Across the country, 10 regions host semi annual festivals where theatres present one hour competition performances for official adjudication. Winners advance to Regionals, and from there to the National AACTFest stage. In 2024, the Des Moines Playhouse represented Iowa at Nationals with Men on Boats — and hosted AACTFest2025, the National Festival, in Des Moines.

We’ll soon be announcing the location and March dates for the 2027 ICTA State Festival, and we encourage every community theatre to start preparing now. If your theatre isn’t yet a member, this is the perfect moment to join our statewide network and take part in the festival experience. Visit the ICTA website to get connected and begin planning your production.
Visit us at https://iowatheatres.org/ or here on Facebook.

In early May, we hosted our first ICTA Webinar with Stephanie Neppl from Travel Iowa, who walked us through the state’s marketing tools and how theatres can reach audiences across Iowa and beyond. If you haven’t explored this system yet, it’s an easy and powerful way to boost your visibility and attendance.

Our June webinar will feature Jennie Knoebel, Director of the Iowa Arts Council, Iowa Arts & Culture, who will share insights on arts engagement and statewide grant opportunities. These sessions are open to any community theatre or organization that supports the stage — members and non members alike.

To our member theatres: Be sure to tag ICTA on Facebook when you post your events. When we see them, we help boost them — because your success is Iowa’s success.

Have a wonderful month, and I look forward to seeing you under the lights.

Warm regards,

Frank Sposeto III

🎭 Iowa Theatre Friends — Let’s Level Up Together!

The next ICTA Statewide Stage Session is coming up on May 5 from 6–7pm, and we’re thrilled to welcome Stephanie Neppl from Travel Iowa as our featured speaker! All on a Zoom video call!

This session will walk you through how to set up and manage your Travel Iowa account, so your theatre’s events get the visibility they deserve. More eyes on your shows means more audiences, more engagement, and more support for the arts in your community.

We will also cover the ICTA show review process and talk about the value in being an ICTA theatre or individual member.

As President of the Iowa Community Theatre Association, my goal is simple:
Help our theatres stay healthy, grow stronger, and empower the next generation of theatre leaders across Iowa.
Training like this is one of the most practical ways we can build that momentum together.

🌟 Who should attend?
• Theatre organizations
• Artists and performers
• Board members & volunteers
• Anyone who wants to boost their theatre’s reach and impact
