We partner with people, organizations, and the greater global community to drive policy progress in three issue areas—mitigating climate change, avoiding the use of nuclear weapons, and preventing mass violence and atrocities. The Stanley Center believes that the actions of individuals have impact outside of their immediate sphere of influence and that there exists a collective responsibility of all people to one another, to our planet, and to building a just and sustainable future. While Facebook’s corporate approach stands in contrast to those beliefs, we feel an obligation to maintain a presence on the platform for the greater purpose of connecting with our community and inspiring action consistent with our shared responsibility.

Thank you to University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC) and World Press Institute for their partnership to share and discuss the new documentary, Bombshell, with Iowa journalism students and visiting World Press Institute Fellows at FilmScene this week!

Eighty years after the atomic bombings of Japan, Bombshell reveals how the US government co-opted the press and censored reporting from the ground to conceal the human toll of the bomb.

The film tells the story of one journalist who did the government's bidding—and the reporters who challenged the official narrative.

The Stanley Center's journalism and media program is screening Bombshell at key events to raise awareness and inspire thought and action among journalists and journalism students.

Programs organized by the Developing Story Project help equip participants with the knowledge, skills, resources, and relationships they need to effectively report on nuclear weapons.

Two civil rights leaders in the struggle for educational equality, Carlotta Walls LaNier of the Little Rock Nine and Dr. Leona Tate of the New Orleans Four, will be visiting Muscatine, Iowa, on Thursday, October 1, to spend an evening in conversation with the local community. 📢

On November 14, 1960, six-year-old Leona Tate and two other girls, later known along with Ruby Bridges as the New Orleans Four, entered and integrated the all-white McDonogh 19 School, escorted by US Marshals. Three years earlier, in 1957, Carlotta LaNier and eight other teenagers in Arkansas, the Little Rock Nine, integrated the all-white Little Rock Central High School, escorted by soldiers from the US Army's 101st Airborne Division.

Courageous leadership by Ms. LaNier and Dr. Tate helped pave the way for a fairer and more just society.

Ms. LaNier and Dr. Tate will share their stories with the Muscatine community. Don’t miss your chance to hear and meet two leaders of the civil rights movement!

Ms. Howe traveled to Türkiye this summer as part of the 2026 Catherine Miller Explorer Award. On her educational journey, she visited the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the "fairy chimney" rock formations of Cappadocia, the Neolithic settlement site of Çatalhöyük, the travertine terraces of Pamukkale near the ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis, the archaeological site of the ancient city of Troy, and many more unique places. 🇹🇷
