🤲 In this final week of Mental Health Awareness Month, we reflect on how touch can restore a sense of steadiness and presence.

At times, we may feel restless, distant, or disconnected. These experiences are part of being human, yet they can leave us feeling unsettled.

Touch is one of the most direct ways we return to a sense of presence. It reminds us that we are embodied, supported, and not alone. In these simple physical moments, we can also become more aware of God’s steadfast presence with us.

Caring for our bodies is part of caring for our whole selves.

Grounding Through Touch:
🤲 Place a hand over your heart and take slow, steady breaths
🌞 Notice the feeling of warmth, sunlight, or air on your skin
🧘 Hold something steady, such as a chair or table, and feel its support
We are not only thinking beings. We are whole people, created in God’s image for connection, steadiness, and care.

🌿🍲 As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, we consider how taste and smell can ground us in the present moment.

Taste and smell are closely tied to memory, comfort, and a sense of being grounded. Yet in busy or stressful seasons, it is easy to move through meals without noticing them.

When we slow down enough to engage these senses, we reconnect with the present moment. In doing so, we also reconnect with the goodness of creation and the care God provides in even the most ordinary experiences.

This is not about adding more. It is about noticing what is already here.

Nourishing Practices:
🍵 Drink something warm and notice its flavor and temperature
🌿 Engage a familiar or calming scent
🍽️ Eat one meal without distraction, paying attention to taste and texture
Small moments of attention can support a deeper sense of wellbeing and wholeness.

👂 During Mental Health Awareness Month, we turn our attention to how sound and listening shape our sense of connection and wellbeing.

The sounds that surround us shape more than we realize. Constant noise can make it difficult to rest, focus, or feel connected.

Caring for our hearing is also a way of caring for our overall wellbeing. When we create space away from excess noise, we allow both body and spirit to settle. In these quieter moments, we may become more aware of God’s presence and the voices that truly matter.

This is not withdrawal; it is restoration.

Restorative Listening Practices:
🔕 Lower background noise when possible
🌿 Spend a few minutes in intentional quiet or with natural sound
👥 Choose one conversation where you can listen without distraction
Silence is not empty. It can be a space where clarity and connection begin to return.

🧠 May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how our bodies and senses support our overall wellbeing.

When our minds feel overwhelmed, it is easy to believe we need to think our way back to clarity.

Yet, wellbeing is not shaped by thoughts alone. It is also shaped through the body. God created us as whole, embodied people, and often meets us not only in reflection, but through our physical experience of the present moment.

One gentle way to begin is by engaging the senses. When we return to what we can see, hear, and feel, we begin to recover a sense of steadiness.

Grounding Practices:
🤲 Touch: Press your feet firmly into the ground or hold something steady in your hands
👀 Sight: Look around and name five things you can see
👂 Sound: Notice one consistent, calming sound in your environment

You do not have to solve everything at once. You can begin by returning to where you are.

🌳What is the loudest voice in your head right now? Is it your to-do list, or is it the Spirit?

Our "inner hearing" is often drowned out by the constant "noise" of notifications and internal "chatter." True wellness requires us to tune our ears to the frequency of peace.

Just as we tend to our physical ears, we must tend to our spiritual ones. This is not about hearing more; it's about hearing deeper. It’s about the "Aha!" moment when we finally hear what our body or our God has been trying to tell us all along.

Consider The Following Action Steps:
🧘 Practice five minutes of "Holy Silence" today. No podcasts, no music, no scrolling — just listening for the quietest voice in the room.
🧭 Ignatian Discernment Handout — A spiritual approach to decision-making that combines logical thinking with prayerful awareness of inner feelings to align our choices with God’s will. Find out more at https://bit.ly/IgnatianDiscernmentFramework426

We’d love to hear from you! What did you notice in the silence? What strategies help you tune in more deeply? Share your reflections and go-to strategies with us by leaving a comment or sending an email to [email protected].

🌿 Have you ever noticed how a walk in the woods or the sound of a distant stream can quiet your heart in a way words sometimes can’t?

We believe the same God who gave us the Scriptures also spoke the world into being. When we tune our ears to the wellbeing of God’s creation, we often find our own wellbeing restored in the process.

Science tells us that "nature hearing"— listening to the wind, birds, or water— lowers our heart rate and reduces stress. Spiritually, it reminds us that we are part of a much larger, living story.

When we hear the groaning or the singing of creation, our own wellbeing begins to mirror the Shalom of the earth.

Action Step:
🌳 Step outside for 10 minutes without headphones and practice "active listening" to the world around you.
👂 Try to identify three distinct sounds from nature that aren't man-made.

👂 Over the next three weeks, we will explore how hearing impacts our overall wellbeing.

Our wellness is not only what we eat or how we move — although both are very important — but also how we connect.

When our hearing begins to shift or fade, it’s easy to pull back from conversations. We might stop attending the potluck or the small group because the strain of trying to keep up becomes exhausting.

Research shows a direct link between hearing health and social isolation. This week, we invite you to check in on your "auditory wellness."

If you find yourself nodding along because you can’t quite hear the words, or if you’ve started avoiding crowded rooms, remember: your presence is needed.

Action Step:
📝 Consider scheduling a hearing screening
👥 Simply sit in a quiet room with a loved one and practice focused, one-on-one listening
