๐จ STOP ALLOWING DOGS TO BRING MORE PUPPIES INTO A WORLD THAT ALREADY HAS NOWHERE FOR THEM TO GO!
๐ THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE HAVE A DOG OVERPOPULATION CRISIS!
Today, I am angry. Really angry.
We have been trying to help some Chihuahuas living in a low income community. These dogs are allowed to wander freely, unconfined, unprotected and unsterilized.
One of the females has been in heat and may now be pregnant.
We offered to help get the dogs spayed and neutered.
But the ownerโs wife doesnโt want the female spayed because she might already be pregnant.
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Do people genuinely not understand what is happening to dogs in our communities right now?
Shelters are overwhelmed. Rescues are stretched beyond breaking point. Foster homes are almost nonexistent. Dogs are being abandoned on dirt roads, left starving, hit by cars and euthanized because there simply arenโt enough homes.
And yet people are still allowing their dogs to reproduce.
FOR WHAT?
So another litter of puppies can be born into an already desperate situation?
Who is going to feed them?
Who is going to vaccinate them, deworm them and provide veterinary care?
Who is going to pay when one becomes sick?
Who is going to make sure every puppy goes to a responsible, permanent home?
And what happens when nobody wants them?
THE PUPPIES PAY THE PRICE. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
And letโs talk about the mother.
Pregnancy is not without risk, especially for a small dog like a Chihuahua. Difficult deliveries, emergency C-sections, exhausted mothers, sick puppies and enormous veterinary bills are all real possibilities.
If you cannot afford to provide proper care for the dogs you already have, how on earth are you going to provide for a mother and an entire litter?
A DOG DOES NOT NEED TO HAVE PUPPIES TO LIVE A HAPPY, HEALTHY LIFE.
And being potentially pregnant does not automatically mean a dog cannot be spayed. A veterinarian can discuss the options, including spaying during pregnancy.
Nobody is asking people to stop loving their dogs.
We are asking them to take responsibility for them.
And before anyone says this is about people being poor, IT IS NOT.
There is absolutely no shame in struggling financially. That is precisely why rescues like ours offer help.
BUT WHEN HELP IS OFFERED AND PREVENTABLE BREEDING IS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE, THAT IS A CHOICE.
We are out there every day dealing with the consequences of those choices.
We see the frightened dogs running through traffic.
We see the starving mothers.
We see puppies dumped like rubbish.
We see the dogs nobody wants once they are no longer small and cute.
We see the rescues desperately begging for fosters and the shelters running out of space.
And we are tired of watching this happen over and over again.
STOP THINKING ABOUT HOW CUTE PUPPIES ARE AND START THINKING ABOUT WHAT THEIR FUTURE WILL LOOK LIKE.
If you own a dog, keep that dog safely contained. Get your dog spayed or neutered. Provide food, water, shelter and veterinary care. If you need help, ask for it.
But please, stop creating more lives when so many existing lives are already being thrown away.
RESCUE CANNOT KEEP CLEANING UP THE CONSEQUENCES OF IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP.
We can offer assistance. We can arrange surgeries. We can educate. We can support.
But we cannot make people care enough to accept that help.
๐พ FEED. FIX. NETWORK. KEEP DOGS OUT OF THE SHELTERS.
