Happy 80th Anniversary of Italy's Republic Day!

Today, June 2, Italy celebrates the 80th anniversary of the historic 1946 referendum that transformed the nation from a monarchy into a republic. For eight decades, Italians have commemorated this day as a symbol of democracy, unity, and national pride.

Here in Firenze, the occasion is marked with ceremonies, the display of the Italian tricolore, and a shared appreciation for the history and values that have shaped modern Italy. As we walk through the streets of this remarkable city, it's impossible not to reflect on the generations who helped build the Republic we celebrate today.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On this Memorial Day, we pause as a nation to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, selflessness, and devotion to duty have secured the freedoms we enjoy and upheld the values upon which our nation was founded.
As Italian Americans, we take particular pride in the generations of our community who have answered the call to serve, contributing with honor and distinction to the defense of liberty at home and abroad. Their legacy reminds us of the profound cost of freedom and the enduring responsibility we share to preserve it.

Today, we reflect with gratitude and reverence, keeping in our thoughts and prayers the fallen, their families, and all who continue to serve. May we honor their memory not only with words, but through our actions, by living with purpose, unity, and a renewed commitment to service.

On behalf of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, we wish you and your families a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.

We invite you to travel with us, have some fun, and taste six fascinating Tuscan superstars both white and red from Castello Banfi on our journey into the realm of fine wine.

- Did You Know?

Some say Italian wine is intimidating, but it need not be. Through the ages, Italian wine has been lauded for its characteristics as a simple, natural beverage. Join us on a wine journey to Italy's famed region of Tuscany where we will swirl, sniff and taste our way through some Tuscan superstars, discuss how to understand them and regale you with intriguing information as to their names, stories and history. We shall also discuss wine basics; (sight, smell, taste, and touch); and the pairing of food and wine. We plan to dispel some wine myths such as “white with fish and red with meats."

Award winning Castello Banfi was founded in 1978 thanks to the will of two Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani. From the beginning, the goal of these brothers was to create a state-of-the-art winery combined with the most advanced science in the vineyards for the production of premium wines.

Our speaker is Sharron McCarthy, Past President of the Society of Wine Educators, former VP of Banfi Vintners. In 2015, the Italian government inducted Sharron into the Wines of Italy Hall of Fame which took place at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC. Sharron was also a guest on the national OSDIA Interviews LIVE! with Mark DeNunzio in 2021.
