The 2015 Breastfeeding and Feminism International Conference took place last week. We love this reminder-- one of the many reasons why it is so important to normalize nursing in public!

Am I making enough milk? Is my baby hungry after feeding at the breast? What signs should I look out for? If you are asking yourself these questions, you aren't alone. These are the most common questions we get here at La Leche League USA.
Do you have breastfeeding questions or concerns? PM us, and we can connect you to your local La Leche League Leader.

A baby who is sleeping rather than feeding every 2-3 hours or who is generally lethargic may need to be assessed by a health care provider to make sure that they are adequately hydrated. Here are more warning signs to look out for: https://www.facebook.com/LaLecheLeagueUSA/photos/p.1721611477867391/1721611477867391/?type=3

If you notice these signs, your newborn is likely getting enough milk:
Baby nurses frequently, averaging at least 8-12 feedings per 24-hour period.
Baby is allowed to determine the length of the feeding, which may be 10 to 20 minutes per breast or longer.
Baby's swallowing sounds are audible while breastfeeding.
Baby should gain at least 4 - 7 ounces per week after the fourth day of life and roughly an ounce a day after the first two weeks.
Baby will be alert, active, and readily cuing for food.
Baby looks a healthy color and has firm skin that bounces right back if you pinch it gently, and will be growing in length and head circumference.
A baby who is sleeping rather than feeding every 2-3 hours or who is generally lethargic may need to be assessed by a health care provider to make sure that they are adequately hydrated.

Q: Why does my breastfed baby take at most 4 ounces (120 mL) from the bottle when my neighbor’s formula-fed baby takes 7 or 8 ounces (210-240 mL)? Am I doing something wrong? A: You are not doing anything wrong. And in this case, more is not necessarily better. Formula-fed babies typica

BREASTFEEDING FACT:
"Your breasts can detect if your baby is ill and change to provide your baby with the antibodies they need to get better!"

There is research that suggests that when your baby nurses at the breast, their saliva is actually transferred backwards into the ni**le. This allows your body to begin the process of creating breast milk that is specifically attacking the virus or bacteria that is making your baby ill!

This is one of the reasons why breastfed babies tend to have fewer infections, and when they do get sick, they recover more quickly.
Your milk is WAY MORE than just food for your baby. Your milk is actually the perfect MEDICINE. Not only is it made specifically for your baby, but also for exactly what is making them sick!

These changes that occur in breast milk to accommodate your babies needs, can sometimes be seen when the milk is pumped. It may appear as a different color than usual, although this is NOT always visible. You do not need to worry if you cannot detect the change, just trust that your body knows exactly what to do to take care of your little one.

This is something important for exclusively pumping moms to keep in mind. While your breast milk will respond to the detection of a virus or foreign bacteria, you will not be receiving the same “communication” of the baby’s saliva drawing up into the ni**le as with nursing.

My best advice for all breastfeeding moms, nursing at the breast or exclusively pumping is to find ways to be as close to your baby as possible. Even being drooled on (among other things) will help this transfer to take place and kick start your body to begin the process of creating the special “medicine” that your baby needs and can only get from you!

This is a common myth and one that will just not go away even though the research shows it is FASLE! Breastfeeding does NOT cause cavities. However we do have research that the following things DO cause cavities including: sugar, genetics, poor oral hygiene, maternal smoking during pregnancy, maternal and/or foetal illness during pregnancy...among others! However, breastfeeding is not one of them. Help spread the facts to stop the fear! '
