INVESTIGATION LEADS TO MAJOR CONTRABAND DISCOVERY INSIDE GEORGIA STATE PRISON
MURPHY, NC — What began as a search warrant ex*****on in Cherokee County has now led to the discovery of a significant amount of contraband inside a Georgia State Prison.
On June 1, 2026, investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Union County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at the residence of Amanda King. During the operation, a trafficking amount of methamphetamine was seized, and two individuals were arrested.
As the investigation continued, Cherokee County Narcotics Detectives discovered that Amanda King had been using jail phone calls to communicate with a male identified as Rudy Cameron Lee, 34. Investigators determined that Lee was currently incarcerated in a Georgia State Prison, serving a sentence for Voluntary Manslaughter.
Upon learning that Lee was allegedly using a cell phone while incarcerated, Cherokee County investigators contacted the Union County Sheriff's Office for assistance. Union County investigators quickly coordinated with Georgia Department of Corrections investigators, who conducted a search of Lee's prison cell.
The search resulted in the seizure of:
• 7 cellular phones
• 1 mobile hotspot device
• 948 grams of methamphetamine
• 2,210 grams of ma*****na
• 3,245 grams of to***co
• 1 digital scale
• Earbuds
• Allen keys
• Charging cables and accessories
Lee's projected release date on his current sentence is estimated to be around 2038. At this time, it is unknown what additional charges may result from the contraband discovered in his prison cell.
Sheriff Chris Wood commends the dedication and teamwork demonstrated by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Union County Sheriff's Office, and Georgia Department of Corrections investigators. This case is another example of how law enforcement agencies working together can disrupt criminal activity, even from behind prison walls.
This investigation remains ongoing.
