The opportunities and resources available to a student often come from more than one place.

It may take a teacher who notices a need, a local organization that knows about a resource, a business willing to help, or a neighbor who knows exactly who to call.

That is what strong community connections can do. They help turn scattered pieces into real opportunities for young people.

For a student, that connection might mean getting what they need for school, finding a program they did not know existed, or simply having one less barrier in the way.

No one person or organization has every answer, but when we stay connected and share what we know, students have more chances to find the support and opportunities that fit them.

What if a student discovers something they are good at simply because they had the chance to try?

What if one new experience introduces them to an interest, a skill, or even a future they had never considered before?

Young people need room to wonder about those possibilities. They need opportunities to explore, ask questions, change their minds, and figure out what feels meaningful to them.

Not every “what if” will become the thing they pursue, and that is part of growing too. What matters is having enough access and encouragement to imagine more than one path forward.

That is the kind of possibility we want young people in our mountain communities to have.

When we talk about creating opportunities for young people, sometimes access begins with something much more ordinary than we might think.

For a student, having shoes that fit comfortably can mean participating in school without worrying about sore feet or feeling self-conscious. Knowing that financial help is available for education can make a future they were unsure about feel a little more within reach.

These things may seem simple from the outside, but for the young person experiencing them, they can remove one more obstacle between where they are and where they want to go.

That is why access matters. Young people deserve the chance to participate, explore their possibilities, and decide for themselves what comes next.

One thing you'll notice about living in our mountain communities is that people still look out for one another. Whether it's checking on a neighbor, encouraging a student, or lending a helping hand when someone needs it, those small acts of kindness happen every day. They may not make the headlines, but they're part of what makes this such a special place to call home.

That same spirit is one of the reasons students across Cherokee, Clay, and Graham counties know they have people cheering them on. Every encouraging word, every act of generosity, and every person who chooses to care helps remind a young person that they aren't walking through life alone.

We're thankful to live in a place where people still believe in showing up for one another.

🍂 Well... it finally feels like fall.

After a long stretch of hot days, it's nice to wake up to cooler mornings and see the mountains starting to hint at their fall colors.

This season has always been one of our favorites. It's a time when schools are in full swing, communities come together, and neighbors continue looking out for one another.

We're looking forward to all that's ahead this fall and are grateful to be part of communities that care so deeply about their students.

Go the Extra Mile Today became an official nonprofit in 2024. But the work it represents has been part of this community for decades.

What the formal structure has allowed us to do is bring all of that history under one roof and build on it in ways that were not possible before. A record number of scholarship applicants this spring. Shoe Fund deliveries reaching students across Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County. New partnerships with organizations across the region who believe in this work as much as we do. A growing community of people who show up, share our story, and invest in the students who need it most.

None of this was built by us alone. It was built by every person who donated, every school that trusted us, every organization that said yes, and every community member who passed our name along to someone who needed to hear it.

We are so proud of what this community continues to build together. And we are just getting started.
