We have some exciting news to share.

Go the Extra Mile Today was nominated as Organization of the Year at the Clay County Chamber Annual Dinner, and we are still humbled to have been in that lineup.

But the night had another moment that stopped us in our tracks. A gift basket donated in support of GTEMT was won by a representative from Granny's Attic Thrift Store. If you know Granny's Attic and what they do for nonprofits throughout Clay County, you know there is no better home for that basket.

To be nominated, welcomed, and truly seen by the Clay County community fills our hearts. This is exactly the kind of partnership that makes western North Carolina so special.

Thank you Clay County. We are so glad to be here.

Over the past few weeks, we had the honor of presenting this year's Extra Mile Scholarship awards to five outstanding students across Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County.

Each one was recognized in front of the people who have cheered them on their whole lives, and we could not think of a better way to celebrate them.

Congratulations to our 2026 recipients.

This community showed up in a big way last week.

Principals, superintendents, counselors, parents, family members, alumni from years past, and community members all gathered to celebrate this year's Extra Mile Scholarship recipients. The energy in that space said everything about how this region feels about its young people.

To every single person who came out, thank you. These students felt every bit of it.

We cannot wait to see where their futures take them. ✨

This week we gathered to celebrate this year's Extra Mile Scholarship recipients, and some very special guests showed up.

Five alumni from years past came back. Not because they had to. Because this scholarship meant something to them and they wanted these students to feel that.

Three of this year's recipients were there in person. And see that photo being held up in the group? That is one of this year's recipients who could not make it. Her fellow scholars made sure she was still part of the moment anyway.

Fourteen years of this community believing in its young people, all in one place.

More from the celebration coming soon.

We say it a lot, but we mean it every time.

Students are the reason this work exists. Not the programs, not the numbers, not the milestones. The young people in our community who get up every day and keep going despite everything life throws at them.

That is who we are here for. That is who this community keeps showing up for.

Thank you for being part of it.

The Extra Mile Scholarship started with a belief that not enough people were acting on.

That the students who push through the hardest circumstances, who show up for their families, their classmates, and their communities while quietly carrying more than anyone knows, deserve to be recognized just as much as anyone else.

Steven Aft, Founder and President of Go the Extra Mile Today, started honoring that belief in 2013. One scholarship. One student per high school. A room full of people saying out loud that this young person did something worth celebrating.

Thirteen years later, 21 students applied this spring. More than any year before. And five more young people from Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County just found out their community has been paying attention all along.

Some things are absolutely worth keeping going.

Watching this community celebrate five students this week has reminded us of something important.

This is what it looks like when people decide to show up for young people they may never meet. When neighbors invest in neighbors. When a region says out loud that its students matter.

The Extra Mile Scholarship keeps going because this community keeps choosing to make it happen. If you felt something this week and want to be part of what happens next spring, we would love to have you with us.

This is the moment we have been working toward, and we are so proud to share it.

Western North Carolina, meet your 2026 Extra Mile Scholarship recipients.

🎓 Madison Queen, Andrews High School, heading to North Carolina State University

🎓 Paula Huerta, Hayesville High School, heading to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

🎓 Kalli Hagelin, Hiawassee Dam High School, heading to Appalachian State University

🎓 Brady Grant, Murphy High School, heading to Western Carolina University

🎓 Sharea Kirkman, Robbinsville High School, heading to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

These five students sat down and shared their stories with us this spring. They were honest about where they have been and bold about where they are going. Reading their applications reminded us exactly why this scholarship exists and why this community keeps showing up to make it possible.

To everyone who contributed to the Extra Mile Scholarship fund, this is what you made happen. Thank you.
