We begin this week with a grateful heart.

Grateful for the students across Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County who walked through their school doors this month ready to take on a new year. Grateful for the schools that welcome them every single day. And grateful for a community that quietly and consistently shows up to make sure more of those students walk in feeling like they belong.

The Extra Mile Shoe Fund exists because of people like you. And that is not something we take for granted for a single day.

The Extra Mile Shoe Fund works directly through local schools to make sure students who need shoes can get them quietly and with dignity. No complicated process. No public ask.

Whether you are a student, a parent, or someone who cares about a young person in this region, the best first step is a simple conversation with a school guidance counselor. They know how to help and they are there for exactly this.

Nobody should have to start the school year worrying about their shoes. That is what the Shoe Fund is here for.

This moment made our hearts full.

Last week, Cherokee County Schools shared this photo from their Opening Session, where the Extra Mile Shoe Fund was able to present a $1,500 check to support students in Cherokee County right before the school year began.

None of this happens without a community that believes these students are worth showing up for. Every contribution to the Shoe Fund is what makes a moment like this possible. And seeing Cherokee County Schools celebrate this on their own page reminded us exactly why this work matters.

At the recent breakfast in honor of all the staff of Cherokee County Schools, I had the privilege to have a picture captured with the man who indeed “makes the wheels go round and round” for many students. I am certain after day two, he knows all the kids by name and has spoken some words of encouragement to each.

In all our schools across the region Trevor raises the bar for dedication to his work to at least 200%.

A pair of shoes is a practical thing. But what it does for a student goes a lot further than their feet.

It is the difference between a student who walks into school distracted and one who walks in ready. The difference between a kid who spends the day hoping nobody looks down and one who spends it paying attention to what is being taught. The difference between feeling like you belong in that room and quietly wondering if you do.

That is what a contribution to the Extra Mile Shoe Fund actually buys. Not just footwear. A student who can show up fully on day one and every day after it.

Think about your first day of school.

The nerves. The excitement. The hoping everything goes right. Now imagine carrying all of that while also wondering if anyone is going to notice that your shoes are falling apart, or that they are too small, or that they are not quite right for the season ahead.

That is the reality for some students in Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County as they walk through the door this week and next.

It is a small thing that becomes a very big thing when you are young and all you want is to feel like you belong in that room.

The Extra Mile Shoe Fund exists to make sure that worry is one less thing a student has to carry. If you have been thinking about contributing, this is the week it matters most.

Supporting Go the Extra Mile Today does not always look like writing a check.

Sometimes it looks like sharing a post with someone who might not know we exist yet. Sometimes it looks like connecting us with a school counselor, a local business, or a community organization that shares our belief that the students of this region deserve better access to the resources they need.

Word of mouth is one of the most powerful things this community has. If you know someone who would want to be part of this work, introducing us is one of the best things you can do.

In the coming weeks, students across Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County will walk through their school doors for the first time this year.

Some of them will be ready. And some of them will be quietly hoping nobody notices what they do not have.

The Extra Mile Shoe Fund exists for that second group. And right now, as back to school season arrives, is exactly the right moment to make sure we can reach as many of those students as possible before that first bell rings.
