Today, on World Gorilla Day, we celebrate these great apes of Africa and the people who protect them—including supporters like you!

We’d like to share one remarkable story your support enabled. It’s a story that starts deep in the heart of Cameroon’s forest.

Once hunters of the critically endangered lowland gorilla, members of the Baka and Bagyeli communities now walk the forest as protectors. With training from the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), they serve as trackers, data collectors, and conservation educators—roles that utilize their deep knowledge of the land while opening doors to new livelihoods.

As one community member shared, “We used to hunt to survive. The gorillas are now under our protection. They are part of our story and our forest.”

Their dedication is making a difference.

Cameras hidden in the lush rainforest now reveal thriving gorilla families, with infants and juveniles signaling hope for the future.

On this World Gorilla Day, we honor gorillas AND the people who safeguard them. They both remind us that when innovation and tradition work hand in hand, we can protect what truly matters.
