This Saturday is the annual Hummingbird Festival at Barfield Wilderness Station. Boro Birders will be represented by Kim McCollom who will give a talk on “Photographing Hummingbirds of the Americas” at 1:30 p.m. She will share tips on how to photograph hummingbirds, including how she took this footage of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding from a Cardinal Flower. She’ll also share hummingbirds she has photographed in Panama, Costa Rica and Peru. Whether you use your mobile phone or camera equipment, you are sure to benefit. Our library is an avenue to learn about owls!

Boro Birders has a special display highlighting our upcoming Owl Prowl. Stop by to learn more about these fascinating birds and take a closer look at some of the unique items featured in our display.

A big shout-out to the TEC for providing the shelf and display space, and a special thank you to the Wilderness Station for providing owl pellets and feathers to help bring our display to life!

We recently wrapped up our Boro Birding 101 series and made some great memories along the way. Our first two sessions were at Stones River Battlefield and our last session was at Murfree Spring Wetlands. Many thanks to Naturalist Jeff Steele who developed the series and guided our new and experienced birders. We hope they continue to join us on our upcoming bird walks.

A couple of our members traveled up to Nashville to watch roughly 180,000 Purple Martins fly in to roost for the night. This happens every evening throughout the mont of August until they fully migrate. Nashville is one the few primary roosting locations in the U.S., the others being Lake Murray, South Carolina and Lake Ponchartrane, Louisiana.

Migration update.

BIRD MIGRATION! The first bird surge of the season has brought much higher than expected bird activity Monday night. An estimated 232,000,000 birds are on the move, tracked by Doppler Radar moving South/Soutwest at 18 mph around an altitude of 2,100 feet. This data is according to BirdCast shows the highest concentration from the Great Lakes heading south across the Mississippi River Valley!
