It was my pleasure to welcome retired Rev. Art Wilson and his wife Lavonne, who is a retired teacher, to the Fine Arts Center and show them the wonderful collection of fine art and 19th century antique furniture of Mr. Jenkins. What a lovely couple they are. They are here from Kentucky spending time with their son, Andy Wilson, Vice President for Advancement at CU, and his family.

It was a pleasure to share Mr. Jenkins collection of fine art and 19th century antique furnishings with Mrs. Garnet Phillips and Mrs. Sofia Dakos. Mrs. Phillips lives in Murfreesboro and Mrs. Dakos is an art teacher for the Southampton County elementary schools in Virginia. I enjoyed conversation with these two lovely ladies and found that we have mutual friends!

It was nice to have Mrs. Edith “Edie” Vick Farris, class of 1953 and former Trustee, visit the Fine Arts Center on Thursday, November 1. Mrs. Farris was on campus for the dedication of the Farris Prayer Room, located on the first floor of Whitaker Library, which she generously donated in memory of her late husband, LTC US Army, Phil Farris.

Her generosity did not stop there. She also donated the glass display case for our newest Jenkins collection to the Fine Arts Center. This glass display case now exhibits a collection of jewelry that belonged to the sister-in-law of our philanthropist, Wayland Jenkins. Pictured from left: Liz Brown, Claire Strickland, Edie Farris, and John Tayloe.

Come see our newest collection! To schedule a visit for your art league, church group, civic group, class or friends and family, contact Twyla Duke by calling (252) 398-6320.

Thanks to Mr. Joseph Henry Jenkins, brother of Mr. Wayland Jenkins, for his generous donation of jewelry, which belonged to his late wife, Jenny, who passed away in June 2017 (refer to June 8, 2018 post). Jenny Beecher Cooke Jenkins was an artist who enjoyed life, people, teaching, travel, and painting. She also loved jewelry!

What a heartfelt moment we experienced as Mr. Jenkins saw his wife’s jewelry exhibited in superb fashion. He pointed out certain pieces of jewelry and shared stories of their purchase during travels to Turkey, Greece, Guatemala, and Mexico. Some of the pieces were gifts from him, showing his exquisite taste as well.

Along with this fine collection of jewelry, we have a painting of Jenny Jenkins done by artist, John Silver (his third painting exhibited in The Center) right beside the display. This painting, I believe captures the essence of Jenny Jenkins’ personality – her zeal for life, love, learning, and fun.

Today's post is a watercolour entitled "Boat Scene" by Denis Lord (June 14th 1926 - April 18th 2013).

During his early career Denis was a resident cartoonist with the Leicester Evening Mail, and contributed magazine illustrations and cartoon to various national publications. After his time with the Leicester Evening Mail, Denis worked for Disney Studios in London and became a background artist involved in several Disney films including 'Snow White' and 'Bambi. It was this experience which further promoted his interest into watercolour and oil painting. Denis became a full time artist in 1960. He had several galleries in London including the prestigious Mall Gallery. Various exhibitions, both in England and abroad, have enabled him to sell his paintings worldwide. Since 1979 his marine work had been represented by the Annapolis Marine Gallery and the Windjammer Gallery in Bermuda. Denis was a member of the Bermuda Society of Artists and has a painting in the Masterworks Collection on the Island.

Today's post is of Barclay Sheaks. His biography is from the Virginia Wesleyan University website, https://www.vwu.edu/the-arts-at-virginia-wesleyan/about-barclay-sheaks.php, where he founded the art department there when it was Virginia Wesleyan College. A very interesting person and renowned artist, we are fortunate to have one of his acrylic paintings entitled "Brown Study, Beached" in the Fine Arts Center.

Barclay Sheaks (1928-2010) was born in West Bend, Indiana in 1928 and grew up in the Shenandoah Valley. Sheaks completed his undergraduate work at Richmond Professional Institute, earned a Master of Fine Arts from the College of William and Mary, and a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Christopher Newport University. Sheaks began his teaching career in 1948 at Warwick High School in Newport News, Virginia. In 1967 he left Warwick High School to found the art program at Virginia Wesleyan University. He taught on the VWC faculty for 36 years, retiring as Associate Professor and Distinguished Artist in Residence in 2006.

Over the course of his career, Sheaks also served as artist-in-residence for both the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Richmond Humanities Center. He became a familiar face across the nation as he managed and hosted a how-to-paint-with-acrylics television show on Public Television. He was a pioneer in acrylic painting and wrote extensively on the medium and his techniques.

Sheaks lived most of his life in the Hilton Village section of Newport News, Virginia or at his summer home on the river in Poquoson Virginia. An outdoorsman as well as an artist, he was inspired by the natural environment of the Chesapeake Bay.

His work has appeared in distinguished museum, university, corporate and private art collections worldwide including the Butler Institute of American Art, Columbia Museum, and the Chrysler Museum of Art. Sheaks’ works were prominently featured in exhibitions sponsored by the American Watercolor Society, the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution, and others.

Sheaks donated approximately 50 of his paintings to Virginia Wesleyan University to establish a permanent gallery. Located on the first floor of Godwin Hall on the VWU campus, The Barclay Sheaks Gallery opened in the summer of 2000. View the Barclay Sheaks Collection: http://www.vwu.edu/the-arts-at-virginia-wesleyan/barclay-sheaks-collection.php

Barclay Sheaks passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.
