Whew! The days are flying by! We had a great day in the MIPP Nursery on Thursday when volunteers potted up 207 plants! Species like Slender mountain mint, Eastern Bluestar, false sunflower, common milkw**d and golden Alexanders will be ready for our plant sale during Nature Day on October 10th. We’ll post a complete plant sale list closer to the end of September.

Thank you Colette, Debbie and Rheagan for lending your talented hands once again! We appreciate you so very much!

FedEx Murfreesboro sent their A-Team to give us a hand this morning! This was their 2nd volunteer gig with us and it was a delight to have them back. They collected 6 bags of litter from the banks of Lytle Creek, most of it trash that washed in with storm water after heavy rains earlier this month. All that working didn’t stop them from making a furry friend and enjoying the gorgeous scenery that is our Murfreesboro Greenway!

We are so thankful for the many volunteers already signed up to help out at the Wilderness Station's Hummingbird Festival! If you are looking to help out, we still have seven more shifts available from 12:00pm - 4:00pm on Saturday, September 5th.

Today our volunteer crew tackled the Japanese stilt grass that was crowding out the native plants in the rain garden at Oaklands Park. Our crew and volunteers removed five trailer loads of woody plant overgrowth in order to remove seven bags full of stiltgrass!

Stiltgrass is an annual w**d that made its way to North America in 1919 via shipping crates from Asia, as it was used as a natural packing material for porcelain and other fine goods. Unfortunately, it has spread through 26 states, becoming one of the most prolific and damaging invasive plants today. It invades healthy woodlands and forms dense, thigh-high monocultures that look like a sea of green, choking out all native wildflowers, ferns, and tree seedlings. Now is a great time to remove, before it goes to seed.

After today’s workday, you can now see lush stands of cherokee sedge, panickled tick-trefoil, and a Joe Pye w**d in full bloom! Thank you to our volunteers Anne, Shasta, Cecil, Jacob, Jennifer and Brad for your hard work!

We said goodbye to a good one today. For three years, Riley Stevenson has been a critical piece of our natural resources team developing and leading our Urban Sustainable Communities Initiative (USCI) and YouthLED. She’s been the primary planner and organizer of the Community Garden at Oaklands Park and our food forestry sites too. Her mark on these projects will be felt for a very long time. We’re going to miss everything about her but we’re excited for all of the good things we know are coming her way.

Thanks for everything, Riley! 🫶

When our nest box monitors working the Oakwood route were in need of a place to sit, discuss and record their observations, volunteers Don, Kim, and Janelle made this generous donation of a picnic table! They didn’t just buy it either. Don built it, stained it AND delivered it!

Good friends and memories were made around this table—lots of learning and laughing too. We used it ALL season and look forward to using many seasons to come! Thanks, you guys! 🥰

We are proud to once again join the Stones River National Battlefield in celebration of National Public Lands Day! This annual event is dedicated to caring for the lands and waterways that are a critical part of life in in our community. Please join us on Saturday, 9/26 at the McFadden Farm Unit (**this is a change from the previously posted location). Check-in opens at 8:30 AM and we will work from 9-11:30 AM. Work will center on litter pickup and invasive plant removal.

Registration is through the National Park Service and required at
https://forms.office.com/g/ZL4GcqWAtj by September 23, 2026. Volunteers under 14 years old may participate in litter pickup but not invasive plant removal.

From Eewwwww to Woo-Hoo! A clogged pipe paired with heavy rain caused some flooding at Murfree Spring last week and when the water receded it left a generous coating of mud.

This morning, volunteers gently scrubbed the stepping stones and sidewalk in the garden restoration area toting buckets of water and pushing brooms. The difference is nothing short of amazing. They painstakingly cleaned around the litter boom too and even managed to reach a certain plastic bag that has been vexing OM staff for weeks! Parks maintenance crews will be out soon with power equipment to address the wider area under the water cannon but having these willing hands to address the delicate area inside the garden is invaluable. ❤️

HUGE thanks to Dennis, Ethan, Teagan, Rosalie, Will, Jacob and our BONUS volunteer, Brad, who just happened by and jumped in to help! (After creating an Outdoor Murfreesboro Volunteer Profile, of course!) 😜
