The Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter, NSDAR celebrated this 249th Flag Day in high spirits. Our fun yearly Flag Day Picnic encourages all members to attend the potluck dinner and program with their family. This year we invited Past TSDAR Historian Linda Moss Mines to share her inspirational Betsy Ross interpretation of the creation of the thirteen star flag. We tried creating five point stars with Service to America chair Colleen Crenshaw. We listened to TNSAR Drummer Gary Baggett and TNSAR Fifer Doug Dickerson. We sang patriotic songs led by Regent Valerie Stone DeHoff and gave out great door prizes. It was a fun event with great people. The fellowship time with chapter members is a great way to end the year.

Then on Saturday a few chapter members attended the Sequoyah District Flag Day Luncheon with the Crab Orchard Chapter in Crossville, TN. It is always good seeing old friends and making new ones.

We are truly proud of our United States Flag and look forward to its 250th Celebration next year!

What a great event we had Wednesday night, June 3rd at Linebaugh Library! It was our Grand Opening celebration for our American Revolution Experience Traveling Exhibit from the American Battlefield Trust. We had a wonderful turn-out of 96 participants from the Tennessee DAR State board, local officials, DAR, SAR, Historical Society, Rotary Club, Library Board, Library Staff, Veterans, and Community members. Dr. Amy Sayward from the History Department at MTSU was an excellent speaker sharing how the South was involved in the American Revoltion. The reception was fun and the exhibit is inspiring. Please take time to check the exhibit out. It will be there until June 10th at 2 p.m. under the Library's normal operating hours. Thank you to all three Rutherford County DAR chapters for making all this happen.

Happy Birthday Colonel Hardy Murfree! Today is his 274th birthday. He was born June 5th, 1752 at Murfree's Landing now known as Murfreesboro, North Carolina. He was a Revolutionary War hero known for his bravery at the battles of Brandywine and MonMouth. These led him to be chosen by General Washington to be the military leader for the Battle of Stony Point where he was highly successful.

Prior to 1811, his friend Captain William Lytle had donated 60 acres to develop the town. It was called Cannonsburg after local representative Newton Cannon. In 1811, Lytle, petitioned the state to change the town's name to Murfreesborough in honor of his friend Colonel Hardy Murfree who had died in 1809. This passed and the name was shortened in 1812. Murfree is buried in Williamson county.
