Luk 3:23-38: “And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph…which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.” Go to Luke 3, and read through the whole list of names in this genealogy. What do you notice about the writing style? How are some of the names highlighted? Why does God think it is important for you to see the succession from Adam, at the beginning, to Joseph, Mary’s husband? Who are the most important figures in the genealogy of Christ through Joseph? Pick out one or two of the names that you do not recognize, and do a search on them. What stands out about their place in Christ’s lineage? What are some of the common characteristics of these people throughout history? How did they differ over time? How many of them knew, or suspected, that they were part of some longer, larger tapestry being woven by God in their lives? Why did God start from Joseph and work backward to Adam in this list? What is the difference between Adam, ‘son of God,’ and Jesus as the ‘only begotten Son of God’?

Ps 118:22-24: “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Look up the meaning of the corner stone in architecture. What are the attributes of this component in laying out a new building? Who are the builders referred to in this passage? Why did they refuse to acknowledge Christ when He came to them? When exactly did Jesus set Himself as the corner stone of His eternal Church? What did He say He would use to build the church? How has the building progressed since His death, burial, and resurrection? What makes this imagery so marvelous? How many human stones have been added to the structure in the last two thousand years? How many more are needed before the edifice is completed? Where are you in this picture? What happens when a stone is out of place in the wall of a building? How has the enemy attempted to disrupt the construction process? How are so many diverse stones going to fit together and hold?

Luk 3:21-22: “Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, ‘Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.’” Who were ‘all the people’ that John baptized? What did John’s message and method do for the atmosphere and attitude of occupied Israel? What did the Romans think of this peculiar movement in the wilderness surrounding the river Jordan? How many were there the day Christ approached the river? How did the others who were baptized react to what they witnessed that day? John was God’s herald, announcing the coming of Messiah. Part of his mission was planting the seed of repentance in those he dipped in the waters of Jordan. What kind of ground work did this lay for Jesus’s ministry? How many of His early followers were also John’s disciples? How many of them kept quiet about what John told them, and how many spread the Good News? How vocal are you about God’s Beloved Son, and His Eternal Salvation?

Ps 118:18-21: “The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD: this gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.” What is the difference between chastening and condemnation? How have you been chastened by the Lord so far? What have you done that He could have chastened you sore, but in His Grace, He let you slide? Who are the ones the Lord has given over unto death? What is the death this psalm is referring to? Every one of us is certainly going to die. When you come to the end of your life, how will you be thinking of the Gates of Righteousness? What have you done to ensure that He will allow you into those hallowed gates? What can you do to become more righteous? How does the bible describe human righteousness? What use can you make of a filthy rag? How do you praise the Lord for taking your depravity and cleansing it for eternity?

Luk 3:18-20: “And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.” What do you think one of John the Baptist’s sermons was like? He was not one to sugar coat God’s Word. He also was not afraid to boldly declare someone’s sin, and publicly! What happens in your community, state, or nation, when someone has the audacity to call out a public figure because they are violating one or more of God’s precepts? It is one thing to preach about sin to a church congregation; it is quite another to approach a political figure (like Herod the tetrarch) and confront them about their ungodly behavior. What was John trying to accomplish by reproving Herod for his adultery with his brother’s wife? How are known adulterers treated in your culture? What happens to the culture when adultery and other wicked behaviors are celebrated instead of vilified? What would John the Baptist say if he were to come to your city or country?

Ps 118:14-17: “The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.” What are your personal strengths? What have you always been good at, without really having to put in much effort? How do you account for such abilities? Along with your talents and spiritual gifts, the Lord also created you to respond to music. Every particle in the universe, down to the ones too small to detect, vibrates with its own frequency: Creation literally sings! How often do you stop to listen to God’s song? How does that song relate to your salvation? How is it voiced among God’s people? Whenever two or more believers are gathered together, the power of the Lord’s exalted and valiant Right Hand is magnified and visible on earth. How have you seen Him move when you are in fellowship? How does eternal salvation help you declare your Creator’s mighty works?

Luk 3:12-14: “Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, ‘Master, what shall we do?’ And he said unto them, ‘Exact no more than that which is appointed you.’ And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, ‘And what shall we do?’ And he said unto them, ‘Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.’” Look at the occupations of these seekers. It is possible Matthew was one of the publicans that came to John, and one of the soldiers might have been the Centurion who ended up coming to Christ. John the Baptist did not discriminate against these men, (nor any other), but welcomed all who would repent. Who have you ruled out as a candidate for the Lord’s Salvation? Who are today’s publicans and soldiers? Who is overtaxing the church for their own gain? Who are the ones oppressing Christians, occupying their land, and taking away their resources? John did not condemn either of these, but gave them instruction on how to conduct themselves in a godly manner in Israel. No matter what someone’s background, career choice, or any other category, they can repent and be saved!

Ps 118:6-9: “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” How often do you start your day with the thought, “God is on my side today!” Think about your surroundings right now: what is going on that strikes fear into your heart, mind, or soul? What happens to your fears when you look at them from God’s eternal perspective? What are some of the areas in your life where you have given someone else power over you? Who has the Lord placed in your life, to help you through difficult times? How does His involvement in your struggles affect your desires for those that hate you? What is it about your lifestyle that others might dislike? Is it better to openly display your faith in God, or keep it to yourself? Who are you trusting right now to provide for your needs?

Luk 3:10-11: “And the people asked him, saying, ‘What shall we do then?’ He answereth and saith unto them, ‘He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.’” One of yesterday’s questions was, “How does God ask you to respond to His gift of Salvation?” Jesus gives us part of that answer in this passage. When did you last ask the Lord, “What shall I do then?” What is your motive in asking God for guidance in stressful situations? What about when you are in trouble? How often do you think of what you can do for others when you are experiencing challenges or difficulties in your own life? Take a quick inventory of your current assets: material, relational, financial, and spiritual. Where are your surpluses? What do you have in each of these categories, that you can impart to someone else right now? How many times has God given you the joyful Mission of giving what you have away to someone else in need? When you look at your own stuff (tangible and intangible), do you consider yourself the owner, or simply God’s chosen Steward?

Ps 118:1-5: “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever. Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever. I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.” What happens in your heart and your mind when you feel grateful? How do you feel when someone gives you an unexpected gift? What is the most precious birthday present you have received recently? How do you thank someone for giving you something? How likely are you to give them something in return? The Lord, in His infinite Mercy, has given you the opportunity of eternal life. How does He ask you to respond? How often do you think about how Christ atoned for your sin, and defeated death on your behalf? What was your last distress call to Him? What does it mean to be set in a large place? What are the boundaries of your God-given Mission field? Whom will you show Mercy today?
