in 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced to the last remaining enslaved Black people that they were free.

This day became known as Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S.

We continue our commitment to refusing the white supremacist systems that enslaved millions of Black people and honor those lives lost but not forgotten. Today,

See you tomorrow at the 6th Annual Juneteenth at Riverside Park, 1301 River Street, in Murfreesboro! Gates open at 12P. Free and open to the public. DJ, live music, African American history program including remembering Chowan Beach, food, merch, & educational vendors. Fun for the whole family! Come on down with your canopy, umbrella, lawn chairs, and $. Vendors include: Britney Riddick, Helen Lassiter, Carolyn Wiggins, Smooth's Kitchen, The Murfreesboro Historical Association, Inc., Melissa Stewart, Tina Denmark, Naomi Bishop, TW Bistro & Gill, Museum of the Albemarle, NC Conservation Network. Free people of color lived, worked, and witnessed history in North Carolina prior and during the Revolutionary War. Through various documents, we can learn about these people and have a greater understanding of what country was like then. Check out the link in the comments for the YouTube video.
