3 Things I Wish I Knew Before the DD-214 Dropped 📄👇

When you’re processing out, the transition timeline moves fast. Out-processing briefs throw a lot of information at you all at once, and it’s easy to miss the things that actually matter for your future.

Looking back, here are 3 things many of us wish we knew before taking off the uniform:

1️⃣ The VA Claims Process is a Marathon, Not a Sprint: Filing a claim on your own can feel like staring at a mountain of paperwork. You don’t have to guess what evidence you need—the VFW has accredited Service Officers who will walk you through the entire process for free, ensuring you get the benefits you earned.

2️⃣ The "Civilian Network" Takes Time to Build: In the military, your community is built-in. In the civilian world, you have to find it. Joining a local network of veterans gives you an immediate circle of people who understand your background, your humor, and your skills.

3️⃣ Your Leadership Skills Need a "Civilian Translation": Translating NCO or Officer experience into a corporate resume is tough. The VFW offers transition resources, networking events, and mentorship to help you turn military achievements into civilian career wins.

The transition doesn't have to be a solo mission. VFW Post 4798 is here to help you navigate life after the service, whether you got out last month or ten years ago.

💬 To our followers: What is the #1 thing you wish someone told you before you transitioned out? Drop your advice for the newer veterans in the comments below!

🇺🇸 Stand with our combat-injured veterans! 🇺🇸
Did you know that tens of thousands of our nation’s heroes are currently facing a "Wounded Veteran Tax"?

Right now, under federal law, service members who are forced into early medical retirement due to combat injuries are forced to give up a dollar-for-dollar portion of their military retirement pay just to receive their VA disability benefits. They earned both, but a statutory offset prevents them from receiving both simultaneously.

The Major Richard Star Act aims to fix this.
Named in honor of Major Richard A. Star—a decorated U.S. Army Combat Engineer who medically retired due to combat injuries—this bipartisan bill would eliminate the offset. It ensures that roughly 54,000 veterans whose careers were cut short by combat wounds can receive both their hard-earned retirement pay and their VA compensation.

It’s time to support the men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedom.
Let’s get this across the finish line! 🎖️👇

What kind of member are you?
Are you the kind that shows up, lends a hand, checks on fellow veterans, and helps move the Post forward? Or are you just content with your name on the roster?
The strength of the VFW has always been in active members — comrades who step up, volunteer, support one another, and continue the mission of serving veterans, their families, and our communities.
Every meeting, every event, every fundraiser, and every act of service matters. It only works when we work together.
We encourage all members to come out, get involved, and help make a difference. Your Post needs YOU.
🇺🇸 Don’t forget your next VFW meeting!
🇺🇸 Be active. Be involved. Be part of the mission.
