Kesem at Middle Tennessee State University Kesem is a nationwide community, led by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer.

Kesem is a diverse community led by passionate and empathetic college students working to ensure that children facing the challenges of a parent’s cancer have space, connection, and support to rediscover the joys of childhood. Our mission is to support children through and beyond their parent’s cancer with free, fun-filled creative programs and a lasting community. Kesem at Middle Tennessee State

University was founded in 2022, and supports children in the Murfreesboro and greater Tennessee community by providing Camp Kesem, a free week-long summer camp experience, and year-round Through and Beyond support services. Our chapter is operated by 10 student volunteers and aims to serve 30 campers ages 6-18 with our first camp in Summer 2023. Kesem operates at more than 130 chapters coast-to-coast. Its programs and services are all funded by generous donations from individuals, foundations, and corporate partners. Kesem is a federally registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

Kesem’s support for children grows, adapts, and endures - at diagnosis, during treatment, in remission, after a recurrence, and beyond - showing children that they don’t have to go through these experiences alone, no matter who they are and no matter what happens. 💚

We know that this type of peer-to-peer support can be powerful and transformative for a child, not only in how they cope with a parent’s cancer but in how they view themselves and how they navigate the world. Parents and children report positive mental health outcomes after Kesem, like enhanced communication skills, improved self-confidence, stronger coping skills, and more.

More than 5 million children in the United States are impacted by a parent’s cancer - or 1 in every 15.

Research shows a cancer diagnosis has a significant impact on a household and highlights the need for a form of mental health support to help children cope with the drastic changes they may face - and while there are many resources and organizations dedicated to people with cancer, their children do not often receive the same level of support to address their unique mental and emotional health needs.

Today, there are 5 million children in the United States who have or have lost a parent to cancer. That’s one in every 15 kids. And in its 2024 report, the American Cancer Society expects that 2 million more people will be diagnosed with cancer this year - the highest number in history as cancer rates continue to rise in those under 50.

The need to reach these children is greater than ever, and Kesem’s support must continue to grow, adapt, and endure to create a world where no child has to navigate these experiences alone, no matter who they are and no matter what happens.
