This is a hard post to write, but it needs to be said. If the cat you were feeding all summer is now sick, injured, or you’re terrified it’s going to die in the cold… this didn’t start in winter. It started months ago.
Waiting until it’s freezing outside.
Waiting until the cat is injured.
Waiting until the cat is visibly sick.
Waiting until it’s an emergency.
That’s when options become limited, outcomes become worse, and suffering increases.
Summer and early fall are the time to act when cats are healthier, weather is safer for trapping, and resources stretch farther. That’s when you can spay/neuter, vaccinate, treat minor issues, and prevent exactly what everyone is seeing now.
We know it’s overwhelming. We know people care. Feeding helps in the moment but it’s not a plan. Compassion has to include prevention, not just reaction.
If you’re feeding cats:
• Ask for help early
• Learn about TNR
• Reach out to organizations before it’s an emergency
• Don’t wait for winter to force the decision
Because by the time fear sets in, the cat has already been struggling far longer than anyone realized.
Please let’s stop waiting until it’s too late.
