The Calumet Branch had their annual Scholarship luncheon at Giovani’s in Munster on Saturday. After a delicious lunch, Brent Sidenbender gave an informational presentation on ways we all can stay safe and avoid being the victims of crime.
Our branch is still accepting applications for this year’s scholarships. Applicants must a female student presently attending an Indiana college, university or technical school. Email for applications at [email protected].

The Calumet Branch of the American Association of University Women held their monthly meeting last Saturday at the Highland Library. Our guest speaker was Coach Leroy Marsh, former longtime football coach at Munster High School. Coach Marsh brushed us up on football jargon and plays to give us a better understanding of the game.
At the meeting, members also got to see the ribbons we were awarded for our entry in the recent Festival of Trees competition. Our tree earned third place in both the judging at the luncheon, as well as the community vote. Not bad for being the first time we entered a tree!

Our Festival of Trees committee was hard at work decorating the AAUW tree at the Center for the Performing Arts in Munster. The trees will stay up until January 1 for the public to view. Come on out and check them all out.

At today’s meeting, attendees enjoyed hearing how Katie Sannito started her business.

Katie Sannito owns Gourmet Goddess and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Munster Chamber of Commerce. She also described her support of women owned businesses in the area.

It’s been a busy fall for the Calumet AAUW chapter. The chapter celebrated its 75th anniversary in September. The group continues its tradition of offering scholarships to young women attending colleges and universities in Indiana. One of our recent scholarship recipients, Paige Harrison, spoke to the group about her engineering experiences at Purdue Northwest. She is on to great things after she graduates this Spring. The 2026 scholarship application will be available after the new year.

At today’s meeting, members learned how to handle all those family photos and memorabilia we’ve saved over the years from archivist Jill Vongruben from the Wildwood Missouri Historical Society. Thanks Jill for such a pertinent, informative program and thanks to Gail Lemon-Zona for arranging for Jill to speak to us.
