๐ŸŒฑ Seed to Supper is coming to the Today Farm! ๐ŸŒฑ

Weโ€™re excited to partner with the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Lycoming County to host Seed to Supper, a free vegetable gardening course designed to help you learn how to grow your own food on a budget.

This multi-week program will teach participants how to build healthy soil, plan a garden space, choose crops, care for a growing garden, and harvest what you grow. Participants may also receive free seeds and gardening supplies based on availability.

๐Ÿ“ Today Farm session dates: Thursdays โ€“ April 16, 23, 30, May 7 & 14
๐Ÿ•” Time: 5:00โ€“6:30 PM
๐Ÿ“‹ Registration is required (see flyer for details)

You do not need to be part of our regular Gardening Club to participate in Seed to Supperโ€”and vice versa. However, if youโ€™d like to connect with other gardeners in a more casual setting, our next Gardening Club meeting is Saturday, March 21 at 10 AM here at the farm.

Whether youโ€™re brand new to gardening or looking to sharpen your skills, this is a great opportunity to learn how to grow fresh, healthy food for your household. ๐ŸŒฟ

See the flyer below for full details and registration information!

Spring is coming soon!

Spring is coming soon!

Flowers to plant: Early, Mid & Late Spring ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒผ
Spring planting feels a lot easier when you think in โ€œwaves.โ€ ๐ŸŒŠ Start with cold-tough flowers, then layer in the mid-spring bloomers, and finish with the late-spring showstoppers.
๐ŸŒฑ Quick beginner tips:
โ€ข Plant perennials where youโ€™ll want them long-term (many get bigger each year)
โ€ข For instant color, add a few annuals in pots near the front door
โ€ข If a cold snap hits, a sheet or frost cloth overnight can save tender blooms โ„๏ธ
This simple timing trick keeps your garden looking alive for months instead of one short burst โœจ

It's hard to wait until May but so beneficial.

It's hard to wait until May but so beneficial.

The Hibernation Hack: Saving the "Sleeping Ones." ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ’ค

That leaf pile isn't "mess." That brush isn't "yard waste." That log isn't "debris." Right now, hundreds of animals are hibernating inside them.

๐Ÿ›‘ What NOT to do until May:
- DON'T rake leaf piles
- DON'T remove brush piles
- DON'T move logs or woodpiles
- DON'T burn debris
- DON'T cut back dead plant stalks
- DON'T tidy up natural areas

Safe Winter Activities:
- Clear leaves from LAWN ONLY
- Rake WALKWAYS for safety
- Remove branches from house/driveway only

๐Ÿ”‹ Benefits of Waiting Until May:
- Queen bumblebees pollinate your garden
- Luna moths emerge as nature's wonders
- Salamanders eat thousands of pests
- Toads consume 3,000+ insects each summer

One season of waiting = years of garden benefits!

๐Ÿ’ก Bonus Tip: Place signs near leaf piles saying, "Wildlife Habitat - Please Do Not Disturb Until May."

So much to see and do!

Did you know that having a large population of spiders in your yard or garden means that it has a healthy ecosystem?! Spiders provide natural pest control without having to use pesticides. They eat the bad bugs like aphids that damage your plants. So next time you see spiders know that they are doing good things for you and your garden.
