If you can see your meter lid this winter, you may have a problem.
On Saturday, January 24th, the expected high temperature is 8 degrees with sustained winds! Water, exposed metal, and sub-freezing temperatures don’t play well together!
Your meter may freeze during the winter which will stop flow of water to your home. You can help prevent this by covering your meter lid with something to insulate it or at least break contact with the cold air. A bale of hay is great, but a rug, a piece of cardboard or wood, or a bucket will help as long as it covers the lid. Snow acts as insulation so if nothing else, leave it on the meter lid.
In your home, consider opening cabinet doors under sinks to circulate warm air near pipes. Insulate water pipes that may be vulnerable to cold air drafts. Even consider letting a drip or thin stream of water run through a tap to keep the water moving, especially when temperatures drop below 10 degrees. Lastly, familiarize yourself with how to shut off water to your house. If the worst does happen this can prevent a lot of damage.
