Congress has introduced the Take Care of America's Veterans Act, legislation that includes many provisions the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has fought for and supports.

But there is a serious problem.

To pay for those benefits, Congress would codify previously proposed VA disability rating cuts for tinnitus and sleep apnea. According to VA's own estimates, these changes could reduce disability compensation payments by approximately $57 billion over ten years and affect up to 1.5 million veterans.

Let's be clear. Those savings do not come from waste, fraud, abuse, or bureaucracy. They come directly from veterans.

That is $57 billion that would no longer help veterans pay mortgages, put food on the table, cover medical expenses, support their families, or support local communities across America.

We do not want this fight.

Many of the benefits in this bill are priorities that the VFW has worked for years to achieve. But we cannot support paying for those benefits by taking compensation away from other veterans.

And we cannot allow Congress to establish a dangerous precedent. If veterans' disability compensation becomes an acceptable funding source today, it will become easier to use it again tomorrow.

The VFW refuses to accept the idea that one group of veterans must lose so another group of veterans can win. Veterans' benefits are not charity. They are an earned obligation of the nation and part of the promise made through military service. Congress should Honor the Contract.

A grateful nation pays its debts to veterans — it does not send them the invoice.

Tell Congress to remove the disability compensation offset provisions from the Take Care of America's Veterans Act and find a funding solution that does not come at the expense of veterans and their families.

Historically, D-Day was pivotal in the liberation of Western Europe and a crucial turning point in World War II, halting the horrors of the Holocaust and protecting the democratic values we cherish today. D-Day was a turning point that not only led to the liberation of France but also marked the beginning of the end for N**i Germany. It facilitated the advance of Allied forces into occupied Europe, ultimately establishing the groundwork for a democratic Europe. The principles fought for during this operation continue to inspire global movements for liberty and human rights today.

CLOTHING ALLOWANCE EXPLAINED

This is one of those VA benefits that flies under the radar far more than it should. A lot of veterans either do not know it exists at all, or they assume it only applies to amputees or someone with a major prosthetic. That is not true.

If you use certain braces, prosthetics, orthopedic devices, wheelchairs, or prescribed medications for a service-connected condition, you may qualify for a yearly VA Clothing Allowance.

For 2026, the Clothing Allowance payment is $1,053.19, and the application must be received by August 1, 2026, to be considered for this year's payment.

This can apply to things like:
-- Knee braces
-- Ankle braces
-- Back braces
-- Cervical neck braces
-- Prosthetic limbs
-- Rigid orthopedic devices
-- Wheelchairs in certain situations
-- Prescribed creams, ointments, or skin medications that permanently stain or damage clothing

The key is not just whether you use the item. The real question is whether it is used for a service-connected condition and whether it causes wear, tear, staining, or irreparable damage to clothing.

That means if you have a brace or device that frays your pants, tears up your shirts, damages pockets, wears through clothing, or otherwise destroys garments over time, it may be worth looking into.

The same idea applies to certain prescribed medications used to treat service-connected skin conditions if they permanently stain or damage outer garments.

Something many veterans do not realize is that some veterans qualify for more than one Clothing Allowance payment if they use multiple qualifying devices or medications that affect different types of clothing. The VA reviews those situations individually.

Another thing that trips veterans up is that this benefit is generally handled through the Prosthetics Department at your VA Medical Center, not through the normal disability claims process.

To apply, you generally submit VA Form 10-8678 (Application for Annual Clothing Allowance).
