What may seem small can give someone a little breathing room during a difficult moment and create an opportunity for something more.

Community support doesn't always have to be complicated. Sometimes, it's simply having something useful to offer when it matters.

The best connections often start with something as simple as a meal.

Recently, Officer Shealey of the Kenmore Police Department met a community member who was experiencing homelessness and facing long-term health challenges. Along with sharing a guide to local support services, Officer Shealey used BlueBridge resources to buy the individual some food of their choosing.

Taking the time to provide a meal builds genuine trust. It gives officers a practical way to connect with people and offer meaningful help in the moment.

October is officially here.

As the evenings get cooler and the leaves start to change, the needs in our neighborhoods often begin to shift. Local officers equipped with BlueBridge resources are out there ready to help as the weather turns. That might mean purchasing a hot coffee for someone in the cold or helping a stranded driver get enough gas to make it home safely.

Look out for each other this fall, and know your local departments are doing the same.

When we look at the numbers for this month, a clear picture emerges of what community support actually looks like on the ground.

This month, 60% of all BlueBridge resources deployed by local officers went toward two fundamental needs: temporary lodging and food. Another 20% went toward fuel to keep people moving safely.

The data also highlights who is asking for help. Nearly a third of all support went to seniors in our community, and just over 16% went to youth.

Meeting these practical, immediate needs makes a tangible difference in our neighborhoods every single day.

Hunger can quickly turn a difficult day into a moment of severe distress.

Recently, Corporal Peterson of the Redmond Police Department responded to a community member who was overwhelmed after losing her EBT card. Instead of just offering advice or a phone number, he used the local BlueBridge program to purchase her a meal right then and there.

Meeting a basic physical need is often the very first step in calming a stressful situation. It gave them a chance to have a productive conversation and discuss long-term resources.

Practical support makes a real difference.

When someone is in crisis, help can't wait. Your support is what makes a quick response possible.

Gifts to BlueBridge help fund the programs that local police departments run in their own communities. When an officer meets someone who needs help, those funds can cover a warm meal, a winter coat, or a safe ride home, right when it's needed.

During a recent call, a Tukwila officer met a young person facing more than the moment showed. Behind the situation were some unmet basic needs.

Using the department's BlueBridge program, Mental Health Professional (MHP) Fisk bought them a meal and paid for a safe ride home, after confirming they had a safe place to return to. Fisk also shared local resources and other ways to get help when basic needs aren't being met.

Practical tools like this let officers meet an immediate need while pointing young people toward longer-term support.

Some of the most meaningful community support happens in ordinary moments.
A first responder checking in on someone, a teacher making time for a student, a social worker helping someone access resources, or a neighbor lending a hand. These small acts can make a real difference.

Medal of Valor Presented to EPD Officers

Chief Ken Wade had the honor of presenting the Ellensburg Police Department’s Medal of Valor to Sergeant Ray Cedeno and Corporal Kevin Willette at the City Council meeting on Monday, September 21, 2026.

The Medal of Valor is among the highest distinctions awarded to a law enforcement officer. It recognizes extraordinary courage in the face of an immediate and serious threat to life, when an officer acts with exceptional bravery to protect another person, the public, or fellow first responders.

Sergeant Cedeno and Corporal Willette were recognized for their actions during a domestic violence hostage incident on March 2, 2025.

Ellensburg Police officers responded to a 911 hang-up call and learned that a victim was being assaulted, prevented from leaving the residence, and threatened by a suspect who indicated he intended to set the home on fire with both of them inside.

When officers received information that the suspect had begun setting a fire, they made an emergency entry into the barricaded residence to rescue the victim. Inside, Sergeant Cedeno and Corporal Willette confronted an actively assaultive suspect who continued to endanger the victim and resist officers.

Through decisive action, sound judgment, and a commitment to protecting human life, Sergeant Cedeno and Corporal Willette helped bring the incident to a safe resolution and ensured the victim received medical care. The suspect was later sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison.

Please join us in congratulating Sergeant Cedeno and Corporal Willette on this well-deserved recognition. Their actions reflect the highest standards of the Ellensburg Police Department and the City of Ellensburg.

We also extend our appreciation to the local law enforcement agencies that responded to assist Ellensburg Police Department officers. Their rapid response, coordination, and support were critical during this dangerous and rapidly evolving incident.
