Icelandic Roots

Icelandic Roots Icelandic Roots is a nonprofit, global, heritage community dedicated to preserving and sharing Icelandic heritage, culture, and genealogy.

Icelandic Roots is a global Icelandic heritage community — honoring our stories, connecting families across oceans, and offering resources and programs that help keep our shared heritage alive for future generations. We offer free public opportunities: website, social media, and bi-weekly newsletter (sign up at www.IcelandicRoots.com). There are several ways to participate in the IR community:
--

Samkoma is for friends and supporters (you do not need to have Icelandic ancestry to join).
-- Full Community Access includes access to the Icelandic Roots genealogical database, personalized family research support, live online outreach gatherings and cultural, educational programs, and our Cousins Across the Ocean connections. We believe in paying it forward. Our all-volunteer organization supports heritage education through community outreach, cultural programming, heritage grants, and student scholarships. Whether you live in Iceland, Canada, the USA, or anywhere in the world, your Icelandic story matters. Come learn, connect, and preserve YOUR story and our shared heritage! www.IcelandicRoots.com

🇮🇸 Something exciting is happening at Icelandic Roots today.

In just a few hours, our supporting members will gather on Zoom for a behind-the-scenes look at the Icelandic Rootshús — the heritage interpretive center we're building in Mountain, North Dakota.

What will it feel like to walk through the doors? Host Rob Olason and IR President Sunna will take members inside the vision — the Emigration Trail, the heritage library, the turf house Baðstofa recreation, the Saga Hall, the Wild Iceland Geology room, the children's discovery center. None of it exists yet. But it will. Groundbreaking is August 1, 2026.

This Roots Tips session is just one of many things our members and supporters experience every month — Book Club, Samtal Hour, genealogy seminars, the database of nearly 865,000 individuals, and a community of 80+ volunteers across three countries who care deeply about preserving the Icelandic story.

If you've been following along, sharing our posts, or recognizing faces in our Unknown Photos — thank you. You're already part of this. And if you'd like to come closer, we'd love to have you with us.
