💜🧡 Why We Vaccinate at 6 Weeks 🧡💜
Meet Monica, Joey, and Rachel, three of our adorable foster kittens who just turned 6 weeks old! 🎉 That means they received their very first FVRCCP vaccine, an important milestone that helps protect them from several serious diseases, including panleukopenia (feline distemper).
Right now, there is a panleukopenia outbreak on Oʻahu. Panleukopenia is highly contagious and is often fatal for unvaccinated kittens and cats. Kittens are especially vulnerable, which is why vaccinating at 6 weeks of age is so important.
The FVRCCP vaccine helps protect against:
🐾 Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (Herpesvirus)
🐾 Calicivirus
🐾 Chlamydia
🐾 Panleukopenia (Distemper)
This is also one of the many reasons Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is so important. Every time we alter a community cat, we also vaccinate them against panleukopenia. By doing so, we're not only preventing unwanted litters—we're also helping reduce the spread of deadly diseases throughout our island's cat population.
This kitten season has been especially heartbreaking, and we've seen firsthand how devastating panleukopenia can be. Every vaccine given is another chance to save a life and prevent unnecessary suffering.
