Guten tag, ! This weekend’s has us looking back to 1970, when the Los Altos Town Crier featured three Quadalco Club members “practicing drinking out of b**r steins.” The club’s Octoberfest that year raised money for MV’s Santa Claus Exchange Program.

Turning back the clock – 50 years: Artifacts from the bicentennial time capsule, “buried” a half-century ago, are now on display at the Mountain View Public Library, 585 Franklin St., 2nd floor.

Come view the range of items & bask in the ! The display runs through October.

Happy Uncle Sam Day!
Meet Uncle Sam and Aunt Sam, two of the roughly 180 fire hydrants Mountain View residents painted for the nation's Bicentennial in 1776. The "Paint-a-Plug" program let residents claim a hydrant and make it their own. A fee was collected – $6.00 for one hydrant, $17.76 for three or $19.76 for four hydrants – and in return you would get paint, a paintbrush, “wet paint” sign and drop cloth. By July 4, 1976, over 20% of the fire hydrants in town were painted.

Because today we note the country’s 250th year since its founding, we look back at the year of 1976, when Rengstorff Park was the site of a full day of observance, honors and entertainment, as this agenda for the day reflects.

Well, color me patriotic! To celebrate the in 1976, fire hydrants in cities across the USA were painted in an array of colors and designs – and was no exception.

Residents painted 186 hydrants that year, with each requiring a permit and a fee: $6 for one, $17.76 for three or $19.76 for four, and which included paint and a brush.
