I have been really looking forward to sharing this story with you! I recently got to interview Pam Simmons Setser and her father, Tommy Simmons, about their lives as musicians and impact on the Mountain View, Arkansas, folk music legacy.

But, as often happens with these interviews, I learned so much more...

- About Tommy's growing up in the rural Arkansas Ozarks, where he was born in 1928. At one point, a vehicle couldn't get within a mile and a half of their rural home. Instead, they took a horse, wagon, walked, or hitched a ride on the train, which would stop by their house because his dad worked for the railroad.

- Of the development of Mountain View as one of the country's magnets in the folk music movement. Both of them were there as people from across the country began pouring into the small Stone County community for its weekly pickings.

- The development of the Ozark Folk Center State Park, where Tommy served as its first manager of operations.

- Of Pam's early days as a musician in the Simmons Family, where she played with Tommy and her mother, and her growth into a lifelong musician and teacher -- particularly on the mountain dulcimer.

-- Of local efforts to keep traditional music going through the Committee of One Hundred for the Ozark Folk Center, which helps raise money for projects to preserve traditional arts, and the local Music Roots program, which offers free instruction to local student in acoustic instruments like guitar, fiddle, banjo and mountain dulcimer.

-- And of Pam's return to Washington D.C. in 2023 as a participant in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival -- the only person to have represented the Ozarks in 1970, and return to the National Mall nearly 50 years to showcase the region's culture again.

Story by Jimmy Driftwood
James Monroe McCallister From Stone County Citizen 9/30/86
Hanover, Arkansas and raised quite a family. He was quite an educated man and had the Post Office, a country store and quite a good farm. I loved to visit with him as a child. Since I am now (1986) living my 80th year. I suppose Uncle James has been gone better than sixty years. He was a powerful preacher, and loved to debate with other preachers. He used psychology, sometimes, to settle a difficult problem. He had a big smoke house, but, sometimes, a dog would scratch under, or the door would blow open and he would lose some meat. So Uncle James built a new smoke house that nothing could get in. One morning my Great Aunt Mary went in the smoke house to get some cured ham for breakfast, and there was a big dog in the house. She fastened the door and told the Reverend about it. Uncle James looked at the dog and fastened him up in the house and sent a son to tell a neighbor to come see him. The neighbor came and Uncle James hired him to do some work that he wanted done. After they had made the deal. Uncle James took the neighbor to the smoke house and showed him the big dog, asking him if he knew whose dog it was. The neighbor said the dog belonged to him. Then Uncle James said. “How do you suppose that dog got in my smoke house?” The neighbor said. “Well, James, I guess the followed me in there last night when I got a ham of meat.” Of course he paid for ham by working for the preacher and they were still good friends.

Hello Berry family. Only one week away....it's time for the reunion of the Hezekiah and Eleanor Berry descendants.
