Before you hear her speak at ASU-MH next week, get to know author Anne Keene and the story behind the inspiration for her book—sparked by the discovery of WWII scrapbooks about her father, who suited up as a team mascot and batboy for Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Johnny Sain, and other MLB players at a grueling fighter pilot boot camp in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where “Baseball was King” in 1943.

After his death, she uncovered scrapbooks, military records, autographed baseballs, and rare film reels that revived the legend of the Cloudbuster Nine, the ballclub that famously faced Babe Ruth’s War Relief team at Yankee Stadium.

Anchored in baseball and life’s challenges, this All-American story illuminates the brotherhood of a Navy Pre-Flight school that shaped some of America’s most resilient heroes—including Presidents George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford, astronauts John Glenn and Scott Carpenter, coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant and John Wooden, and dozens of Hall of Fame ballplayers who proudly paused their careers to serve their country.

Few innovations changed baseball as dramatically as the arrival of outdoor lighting in the early 20th century. Keene explores that history in a terrific piece for The Saturday Evening Post about Major League Baseball’s first-ever night game under the lights. Nearly 85 years ago, the Phillies played the Reds in Major League Baseball’s first night game.
