The Mountain Home Rotary had a regular meeting today at Big Creek Country Club. We had a couple of guests and a speaker from the Chamber of Commerce. Seth brought a co-worker with him............Dena Carthew............. Business Dev. Officer. Rumor has it that Dena is the brains of the operations at the First Community Bank. Nothing to be said about the other members at the bank. I'm just stating what I heard. Then Cole Adamson dropped in to pass out a few awards to local Rotary members. Cole is the Rotary District 6110 Administrator. Then............we had our guest speaker from the Chamber of Commerce................Stephanie Jackson. Stephanie is the Director of Marketing and Operations. She was here to promote the Red, White, and Blue event that they put on every summer. That is one great fireworks display. I'll post some pictures of mine taken over the years. That event always draws a big crowd. I think it will officially open at 3:00 PM before the fireworks. This event also involves a parade in Mtn. Home, a rodeo, and other activities, food, drinks, games, music, etc. Find some time to get off your couch and attend.

Thursday's Mountain Home Rotary meeting was a little different, but one that I think we should do more of. We had a communication issue with our speaker, so we just all sat down and got to know each other better. Each member listed all the houses or towns that they lived in over the decades...............and supposedly tell us which one was their favorite. This is one way to get to know each other and become a team. Some of us have known each other for 10-20 years, but there is always som**hing to learn. We need to do more of this.
We also had a new member join on this day. Tim McHaffie is now a member, and he got his red badge today. Every new member is a benefit. The bigger the better.
And then.....................there was Steve Hudson trying to draw for a wad of money. His number was drawn..............he tried to open the lock.................and he just picked the wrong key. We were all sad for that. I think some tears came to my eyes.

Friday morning the Mountain Home Rotary presented a very good program to the 5th graders at Hackler Intermediate School. The program was a "Don't Mess With M**h" talk. We did a presentation to the boys first, and then the girls. Each program was about 45 minutes. I thought the Rotarians that participated did a very good job. For some, it was the first time for this program, and for others it was at least their second time. We present this program every year, and it is very well accepted by the students and faculty. So, for me, I am always happy to see Rotarians take time out of their lives and jobs to participate in a valuable program. The theme of the program was to make the results of crystal m**h use very real...............and to discourage everyone to never try the drug. Slides were shown, and information was presented to open a few eyes. It helps that we have Rotarians that are a former State Trooper, a former MH school principal, a current MH school superintendent, and a mix of many other occupations and histories. And...............several of us have kids and grandkids in the MH school system. And...................Jewel Pendergrass needs to be appreciated for organizing this program every year.

The Mountain Home Rotary delivered dictionaries to 3rd graders at Hackler Intermediate School in Mtn. Home today. Every kid loved getting their gift.................and they got a few minutes away from normal class time. This project is done every year by the Rotary Club. It is short and sweet, and it builds the relationships in the community. It is always a good day. If you recognize any kids, share with their parents. No pictures were taken if the parents had a request to not take their picture.

The Mountain Home Rotary had volunteers show up to deliver dictionaries to 3rd graders at the Hackler Intermediary School. It's this type of activity that Rotary is all about. The time and effort are not much, but the reward is watching the kids get their dictionaries. It's like Christmas in April to them. Next week is Don't Mess with M**h at the same school. Volunteers are needed. This is your community................your schools..............and for some..............your children/grandchildren.

Jay Chafin needs volunteers to help distribute dictionaries to the children again this year. We need at least 10 people to make this short and sweet. It's a good project and the kids love to get a dictionary....................so, if you can help, contact Jay Chafin at State Farm Insurance quickly. I think the project is a week from Friday..................April 17th. It only takes about an hour to get it done.

The Mountain Home Rotary Club had their twice-a-month formal meeting today. After Happy Bucks, our guest speaker was Phillip Johnson................the founder and director of Arkansas Ozarks Outdoor Expo. His goal is to promote a multitude of outdoor activities to promote more tourism and to give locals a reason to stay in this area for vacations. The idea is to promote local small businesses by showing what they offer in this land of lakes, rivers, hiking trails, biking trails, boating activities, etc. In many places in this country, and even in this area, towns are losing tourism, and secondarily losing money. Many small towns are just not keeping up with nice boat docks, restaurants, hotels, cabins, and activities. So, Phillip's mission is to promote tourism by offering more and bigger activities in the area. Hope he gets things to work.
