Last week Into the Light’s Executive Director, Gretchen Smeltzer, and North Central Arkansas Area Director, Karie Brunette, were honored to present at the Arkansas Council for Behavioral Health’s 52nd Annual Behavioral Health Institute in Hot Springs.

Their presentation, “Human Trafficking and Behavioral Health: Identification, Trauma, and Survivor-Centered Responses,” equipped behavioral-health professionals to recognize indicators of trafficking, understand how trauma can affect behavior and disclosure, and respond in ways that promote safety, trust, and connection.

The Council’s mission and this year’s theme, “Rising Together, Moving Forward,” emphasize the importance of collaboration and working together—an approach that directly aligns with our mission and what is needed to effectively prevent, disrupt, and ultimately end human trafficking.

Behavioral-health professionals are often on the front lines, encountering survivors before they are ready or able to disclose exploitation. When professionals understand the signs and use trauma-informed, survivor-centered responses, they can become a safe doorway to support, healing, and hope.

The younger a child is, the more vulnerable they are to predators because they are usually more trusting, lack life experience, can be physically taken advantage of more easily, and often don’t know what red flags to look out for. It’s important to have age appropriate discussions about staying safe no matter how young a child is for this reason. Topics to discuss with younger kids include never interacting with a stranger without a trusted adult present, identifying who is a “safe” adult to go to if they feel scared or uncomfortable, and establishing physical boundaries.
