FFI Southern Council Conclave Famous for delivering Big Checks to the front doors of PCH Sweepstakes Winners 🧡

This annual event draws some 650 to 1,000 participants from all over the US and overseas. Demonstrations of fly tying, fishing techniques, travel, art, gear, and conservation issues are presented. This is the main fund raising event for the Southern Council of the Fly Fishers International (FFI).

FFI Southern Council Members:

Greetings, I wanted to let you know about an upcoming general meeting occurring on Saturday March 23, 2024 at 8:00 am at the Baxter County Fairgrounds. This is for all that wish to attend, it is prior to the start of the last day of the Sowbug Roundup sponsored by the North Arkansas Fly Fishers. Coffee and Doughnuts will be served for those that wish to attend. The Southern Council will also have a table set up during Sowbug Roundup to sell chances for a custom-made net valued at over $1,000 made and donated by Board Member Ethan Igleheart, and it is quite beautiful. So, stop by the Southern Council table and purchase a chance to win a one-of-a-kind custom net during Sowbug Roundup and help support the Southern Council. Feel free to ask about serving in a role on the Board of Directors or tell us what you have been up to with your club. I look forward to seeing everyone at Sowbug Roundup and hope we all have safe travels to and from the event.

Tom Schmuecker (1933-2023) passed from this world on March 14, 2023. His absence will leave a hole in the fabric of fly tying. Ann Schmuecker, his wife and co-owner, had preceded him in death.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Schmuecker family, Wapsi employees, friends and fellow fly fishers. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Kirby & Family Funeral Services in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 20, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Pat Neuner will be officiating.

It is with great sadness we share the passing of Dave Whitlock. Our prayers are with his wife, family and friends as they mourn his departure. What a legacy he left behind for all of us. We should honor him by maintaining and supporting the types of things he pursued in this life. Rest in peace, Dave.

To finish this year’s Conclave, several of us took time to honor and mention those fly tyers who tied in years past at the Southern Council Conclave/Fly Fishing Fair. Check out the updated plaque. We also mentioned Art Mazzier, Sherri Russell and Dominic Zametto who faithfully supported our fly fishing experiences and knowledge through the past years. All of these folks had brought considerable knowledge and skills to share freely with us.

It is our hope and desire that the Southern Council can once again rise and grow to impart our knowledge generously to those coming behind us. Remember you too as a member of the Southern Council are cherished. If you couldn’t attend. We certainly missed your presence.

At Thursday night’s board meeting we will set the date for next year’s event. Then we will share it.

Jackson Rickart is helping three-year old Raylan Grimwald to tie a fly pattern Saturday afternoon at the 2022 Southern Council Conclave. Also present to oversee their efforts were Wesley and Lukas Grimwald along with Andrea Marquis - Michael Davis who oversees the walk-up tyers table is standing back like a proud teacher of young people close enough to assist if needed. It is so nice to see young folks helping out the younger folks. If you weren’t here to witness things like this, then try next year to be here.

Fly tyer heaven on earth will be open Friday at the Baxter County Fairgrounds in Mountain Home, AR. This is a time to sit in front of some highly talented fly tyers and come away with new techniques or patterns.

Seminars for the day include the following: 1. Euro Nymphing Seminar at 10:00 am; 2. Fly Fishing in Belize at 11:00 am; 3. Fly Fishing from a Kayak at 1:00 pm; and 4. Adventures of Fly Fishing in Alaska at 2:00 pm.

The sole workshop will be Tenkara Workshop at 1:00 pm.
