Congratulations to Diane Steele, Donna Judson, and Betty Gaither on their recent Heroes with Halos Awards! They were presented by Becky Rose, Volunteer Services Director; Karla Tyler, Bargain Box Coordinator; and the Bargain Box Volunteers.

A community member wrote:
"On August 3rd, an unexpected incident happened to us in the back parking lot of the Bargain Box Thrift Store. Because the main parking lot was full, I parked in the back of the store and went in to pick up several things. My husband wanted to wait in the car, so we left the car running with the AC on. While I was gone, he couldn't find his cell phone. He thought it fell out of his pocket and rolled under his seat. He felt for it, but couldn't find it. When he tried to get out of the car for a better search, his foot got caught and caused him to fall out of the car and down onto the hot blacktop. I returned to the car and saw him laying on the ground with the car door open. He said he wasn't hurt or injured. I tried but couldn't lift him and he wasn't strong enough to lift himself or help me get him up. I called 911. Meantime, the ladies from the Bargain Box came out and brought ice and a cold wet towel to comfort my husband while we waited for the Fire Department to arrive. When they did, they got him safely back into the car. After we got home, we found my husband had sprained his left ankle and had a few scrapes on his elbow. On August 5th, we received a phone call from Becky at Baxter checking to see how we were doing. We are fine. My husband is wearing a brace on his left foot to help ease the sprain. We wanted to honor the heroes who helped and stayed with us until the Fire Department arrived. We sincerely appreciate these ladies!"

Congratulations to Barney Winger on his recent Heroes with Halos Award! It was presented by Ron Peterson, President/CEO; Becky Rose, Director of Volunteer Services; Karla Tyler, Bargain Box Coordinator; Trisha Terry, Gift Officer/Foundation; Gianna Terry, Gift Officer/Foundation; Sarah Edwards, Executive Director/Baxter Health Foundation; and the Bargain Box Volunteers.

A colleague wrote:
"When a volunteer passed away unexpectedly, Barney came and said 'I will cover his shift for you.' I said – you have big shoes to fill – he replied – 'I know.' When a volunteer was absent for a year, Barney said 'I'll take on their department.' When we received massive train sets, Barney said 'let me make some phone calls to see if we can get more dollars for them than we would selling them at the Bargain Box.' He found a buyer plus assisted in packing and shipping them out. When a volunteer became seriously ill, Barney said 'I'll help out on his scheduled day.' When another volunteer was fighting a health battle, Barney took electronics home to test. He has taken on cleaning silver in his spare time and he fills in when others are absent. When someone passed away and we packed and picked up donations including multiple train sets and pieces, Barney helped sort, price and repair. Barney brings donuts weekly to the Wednesday morning ladies. Barney – aka 'Grumpy' – is unmanageable. He does it his way. He is fun to work with and knows when to behave. Barney, Tom would be so proud of you. I'm grateful for all you've done for the Mountain Home Bargain Box!"
