The Heritage Oak Timeline is taking shape!

We have all been looking forward to seeing our Heritage Oak Timeline, and we’re excited to share a little update on this special project.

Our timeline will use a historic cross-section of the Heritage Oak that once stood in Cunningham Park, paired with a laser-etched acrylic timeline telling the story of Johnson County—from the arrival of Daniel Boone and the county’s founding to the Fiddlers’ Convention, the Green Bean era, Hurricane Helene in 2024, and the many chapters in between.

The project is taking a little longer than we originally hoped, as we’re still waiting for the tree slice that will become the heart of the display. RJ Snyder of RJ Snyder Tree Service has been working with us on this very special piece, and we are grateful for his time, expertise, and partnership. Projects involving a historic tree take patience—and we want to do this one right! ❤️

Once the tree slice is ready, one of our talented anonymous volunteers will prep the surface and mount the slice. Then Kyman Matherly at 865 Fab Lab will create the laser-etched acrylic timeline, bringing the history of our community together with the story told by the tree itself.

And there will be a little mystery to solve!

We’re planning a Heritage Oak Ring Count Contest! You'll have an opportunity to guess how many growth rings the tree actually contains. How old do you think our Heritage Oak really was?

Dolly... a true Tennessee original who never allowed herself to be confined by stereotypes or expectations.
Dolly used her extraordinary talent not simply to entertain, but to make the world a better place. She never forgot her Tennessee mountain home, and through her Imagination Library partners, she has helped put books into the hands of countless children—including children right here in our community.
Her generosity, determination, creativity, and belief in the power of children and the arts have set an extraordinary example for all of us. Thank you, Dolly, for showing us what it means to use your gifts to lift others up.
