Meet Charlie Wiggins the Man, the Myth, The Legion and American Hero!

Charlie Wiggins (1897-1979) was an African American pioneer in the Auto Racing World who fought against segregation in the sport in the early 1900s.

Wiggins was repeatedly denied from participating in the Indianapolis 500. He and other colored drivers, at the time, decided to create their own racing association and compete among themselves.

Dubbed “The Negro Speed King,” Charlie won three of the first six races of the newly formed "Gold & Glory Sweepstake" Auto Race. It was an annual 100-mile speed race for colored drivers.

As a skilled mechanic, Wiggins was asked by “Wild Bill” Cummings, a top AAA competitor, to serve on his pit crew for the Indianapolis 500. Due to the raceway’s strict segregation rules, Wiggins could only be hired as a janitor. After the race officials left the track in the evening, Wiggins would secretly work on Cummings’ race car. As a result of Wiggins mechanic skills Wild Bill finally won the 1934 Indy 500.

During the 1936 Gold & Glory Sweepstakes, Charlie was involved in a 13-car wreck that resulted in his right leg being amputated. This abruptly ended his racing career, as well as the future of the all colored event, which lost its biggest star.

Despite his injury Wiggins continued to fight the segregationist practices of the American Automobile Association while also training young African American mechanics and drivers until his passing in 1979 at the age of 82.
