AI Boom Drives Up Electric Bills
A Bloomberg review of electricity prices at tens of thousands of locations across the U.S. found wholesale electricity is up to 267% more expensive than it was five years ago in areas near new AI data centers. A new generation of data centers that can support advanced AI is rapidly being built up. In the U.S. alone, spending on the construction of this infrastructure has tripled over the last three years. Recent analysis from Goldman Sachs Research forecasts that about 60 percent of the increasing electricity demands from data centers will be met by burning fossil fuels, increasing global carbon emissions by about 220 million tons. The electrical usage of data centers is estimated to double by 2035 as power plants expand to support data needs.
