ASPI has two appropriate technology demonstration centers in Rockcastle County, KY.

For 47 years, ASPI has worked as an advocate for environmental protection, sustainability and social justice, plus demonstration of appropriate technologies that empower people to improve their lives and communities. Appalachia – Science in the Public Interest (ASPI), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was founded in 1977 in eastern Kentucky and is the oldest sustainable advocacy organization in the state. ASPI’s main office is located in Mount Vernon, and the Rockcastle River Wilderness Site and trails are located outside of Livingston. For 45 years, ASPI has worked as an advocate for environmental protection, sustainability and social justice, plus demonstration of appropriate technologies that empower people to improve their lives and communities. Our current projects are focused on renewable energy, simple living, and cultural and ecological education and preservation.

We have events going on for the next three Saturdays that you wont want to miss! Event information can be found on our page, so make sure you're following us.

Oct 10th 10am - Dairy products on the Homestead!

All events are free and family friendly. We welcome familiar and new faces of any experience level to all events. We always provide some light snacks which are partially or fully sourced from local farmers, and some food-related events involve snacks and drinks of their own. Events usually last 1-2 hours. Come on out!

We want to make these programs as accessible and inclusive as possible. You can support ASPI programming through donations, by sharing and interacting with our posts, and (soon) by ordering 2027 calendars and ASPI merch from us featuring our vibrant new logo - which could also be a great gift.

Our 2026 interns are back in classes by now, but here is a reflection from Veronica of her past summer with ASPI. At the end of her blog post, you will find a link to a 20-minute documentary.
